Also, the need for a visa for nationals of WVP countries is not limited to just those with criminal records. Anyone that's overstayed a previous visa by even one day becomes ineligible for the WVP. Anyone that's been denied entry under the WVP program in the past, even if they've done nothing wrong and just didn't strike the Immigration officer as being admittable must apply for a visa from that point forward.

I would think that people with prior Immigration law problems might have a tougher time at obtaining a visa than even those with minor criminal records.

Incomplete apps probably go both ways, depending on who the adjudicator for the application is. An incomplete app could get rejected or sent back for a request for evidence.

An incomplete application is usually denied as a 221(g) refusal for failure to provide specific documents or information. A 221(g) refusal counts as an actual refusal only if not followed up upon, but in most cases the applicant simply provides the additional documents/information and the case is then adjudicated for issuance or denial under another section. Most applications denied are done as 214(b) (insufficient ties) or 212(a) (statutory inadmissability).

Are these by nationality? I'd imagine lots of people who are not Canadian citizens, but residing in Canada, need to apply for a US visitor visa, hence the refusals.

Canadians seeking employment in the US (specific careers) can just write their own TN visa and move/live/work here, while retirees can spend 6 months without documentation and only need to leave for 24h and return for another 6 months. As long as they don't work and have sufficient resources to support themselves, no one cares.

Yes the list is according to nationality.

Why is this so surprising? Undocumented workers don't apply for visas. Those Mexicans who do apply, i.e. the middle class and up, have a low rate of denial because they fulfill all the requirements (and travel to the US to shop, pumping ridiculous amounts of $ (pesos) into the US economy, especially in border areas). Also, Mexico is not really known for producing or harboring terrorists...

Getting a US visa is an expensive PITA, so that if you do it, you better have a good chance of getting it. Otherwise skip the ordeal and just go to Europe.

Also, the US issues plenty of one-visit-only visas for Mexicans.

Just to be a bit pedantic, it is actually according to citizenship (which is sometimes different to nationality).

And 20% for Sweden. I'd think they get approved easily.

I for one am glad to see that my tax dollars are hard at work, effectively keeping those radical Andorrans out of our country.

The African countries certainly seem to have the highest reject rate. A quick scan for countries at 50% and higher shows mostly African.

I find the lowest non-zero numbers interesting:

Taiwan 2.2%
Greece 2.6%
Argentina 3.1%
Qatar 3.2%
Switzerland 3.3%
Brunei 3.5%
Kuwait 3.6%

These numbers are a vast improvement on what it used to be as well. I remember when a friend of mine worked consular at the US Embassy in Accra in the early-mid 2000s, he told me that the rejection rate for B1/B2s was 80%+ and that for first time applicants above 90%.

It doesn't show # of applicants so we don't have any stat. insight. But Andorra 100%? That's a small EU country stuck between France and Spain!
