It's utterly unacceptable not to deliver a passenger's own wheelchair planeside. Wheelchairs are not luggage. Insist on it. Make sure the gate check tag has every interim stop on it. Remind an FA prior to every stop that you have your own wheelchair and you expect it to be delivered on the jetway.

Yes, I know there are a few benighted, backward countries (France, I'm talking to you) that insist that passengers may not have their own mobility equipment until after customs - they do not understand the basic human right that they are denying.

That is an unethical method of getting on board early for families who doesn't have status to board early and snag closer to door seats. AIrline does not require medical certifications like disable parking permits so it is being misused.
Usually there will be tons of wheelchair assisted boarding and many of the wheelchair bound pax always get a miracle healing during the flight and walk off.

My record? 82 DTW to MNL during 09 Thanksgiving week.
