Motor racing helmets on board ?

I want to take a motor racing helmet on an airplane for a race in the UK.
Can it be taken on as hand luggage, or must it be checked on to the hold

There's a danger you might headbutt your way into the cockpit

If you are traveling through US security, aka the TSA, you can wear it as a hat through the checkpoint.

You can carry them onboard as hand luggage: I have done so on US domestics, and I have seen them on international flights as well.

Be sure you're wearing it when you board! ^

I have only carried my motorcycle helmet on to domestic US flights. Good luck carrying on and with your race.^

I can't imagine ther'd be an issue with it, but it will count as one of your two pieces allowed as carry-on.
