Even funnier since in the last 15 minutes 6 320's have just done their turn over my house here in midtown Toronto to land at YYZ. That AB 3XX whine is totally distinctive as I assume they slow the engines down.

Out in the yard last Saturday. About 6 miles from a GA airport. Heard the unmistakable radial engine sound in the distance. As it came closer it was clearly more than one radial, coming my way, then it became several. I just stood and watched as long as I could while a B-17 passed overhead and disappeared on the horizon.

Back in the day, I used to fly Eastern Airlines' L1011's from BOS to Florida quite a bit. I liked the sound of those, believe it was the RR RB211 but I could well be mistaken.

Heard it once at an airshow. Amazing! I also remember listening to the Merlin engines in the old unlimited hydroplanes. There was an opposite experience when I was on a beach in Hawaii and saw two A-10 Warthogs, then hearing their engines after they passed by. It was like a whisper.

Its about bloody time someone with good sense kicked in!

Nothing can ever replace the elegance and power of 4 Olympus 593 engines as it resonates within your chest.

After that, all spooling jet engines are nice.

Also, I enjoy the sound of a good diesel engine!

You do know 747 is very general right ?

747 classics's engine are totally different than -400's engines.

And then PW, RR, and GE supply 747 engines, each manufacturer all have different sound.

Not all A320 use same engine. Are you talking about V2500 or CFM56 ?

No you are correct, L1011's engines only has one manufacturer, and that is RR's RB211.

Also during airplane mechanics school during breaks we would stand outside and watch a local B-17 do touch and goes. They are a sight to watch.

L1011...as some others have mentioned the low rumble at start up was amazing.

Also liked the 727

Not if you are sitting inside the plane -- most of the noise is on the outside, and the only sense of power is while the afterburners are lit. The real thrill of the Concorde was it's low altitude performance with that huge delta wing, allowing some impressive maneuvering right after takeoff unlike regular winged planes.

Ground breaking technology, which led to Rolls Royce becoming bankrupt and Lockheed getting out of the airliner business. Creating a great plane and engine isn't always the best business model
