Out in the yard last Saturday. About 6 miles from a GA airport. Heard the unmistakable radial engine sound in the distance. As it came closer it was clearly more than one radial, coming my way, then it became several. I just stood and watched as long as I could while a B-17 passed overhead and disappeared on the horizon.

Heard it once at an airshow. Amazing! I also remember listening to the Merlin engines in the old unlimited hydroplanes. There was an opposite experience when I was on a beach in Hawaii and saw two A-10 Warthogs, then hearing their engines after they passed by. It was like a whisper.

ROFLMAO! Stellar!!!
Its about bloody time someone with good sense kicked in!
Nothing can ever replace the elegance and power of 4 Olympus 593 engines as it resonates within your chest.
After that, all spooling jet engines are nice.
Also, I enjoy the sound of a good diesel engine!

Personal favorite, PW4077 and PW4090.
You do know 747 is very general right ?
747 classics's engine are totally different than -400's engines.
And then PW, RR, and GE supply 747 engines, each manufacturer all have different sound.
Not all A320 use same engine. Are you talking about V2500 or CFM56 ?
No you are correct, L1011's engines only has one manufacturer, and that is RR's RB211.

Not if you are sitting inside the plane -- most of the noise is on the outside, and the only sense of power is while the afterburners are lit. The real thrill of the Concorde was it's low altitude performance with that huge delta wing, allowing some impressive maneuvering right after takeoff unlike regular winged planes.

Ground breaking technology, which led to Rolls Royce becoming bankrupt and Lockheed getting out of the airliner business. Creating a great plane and engine isn't always the best business model
