Note I did not say it should not be free. I said they had to accept responsibility. They could easily drop the limit for compensation to a say $500 and accept liability for everything. If you are traveling with crap worth more than it is your responsibility to either have trip insurance for your crap or "self" insure it. As I say it is no different than shipping with UPS or the USPS.

This makes zero sense. Why ask the airline to drop compensation limits so that they pay you on small electronics when you can easily carry your IPOD in your purse/briefcase?

If I am travelling and check in 3 suits I should have to make due with only $500 because you cannot carry your 12 ounce IPOD in your briefcase? My luggage doesn't - but some people's luggage alone costs more than $500.

Not reimbursing on electronics makes sense because you can tote them in your carry-on very easily

Electronics are used in larger things than ipods. Aeroplanes; for example. Tote-away !

I don't seek to discourage anyone from posting comments at the DOT site, in fact I encourage it.

But, it is going to take a lot of postings to be heard above the background noise.

109 pages of public comments... no, I did not read them all. But every one I opened, (repeat, every one) pertained to the peanut allergy issue.

I don't think it will be that bad. First of all, the DOT is actually required to read and respond to every comment. Second, when people say the same thing over and over, they generally will respond with something like, "Many commenters said X," or "27 comments mentioned Y." Unique ideas get attention. I once provided unique comments to some FAA regulations (I'm a pilot), which were individually responded to when the final rule came out.

Baggage liability is not just a Delta issue, anymore than most of these are, but if airlines have more (not total) responsibility for baggage handling, they are well-positioned to demand improvement. Of 47 connections I have had through MIA, my bags have made it with me, to my destination, without theft or damage, twice. I now avoid this airport and, as a result, American, like the plague. AA has to have some power in decisions here...

Because this is not a topic specific to Delta Air Lines or the SkyMiles frequent flier loyalty program, the new home for this thread is now the TravelBuzz! forum.

I've had my bags delayed a few times but luckily, never destroyed.

Many of these rules seem like common sense good ideas. But, how will the 24 hour rules possibly help consumers? Surely this will do nothing but drive up base fares.

My suggestion would be to also ban the practice of charging for seats in your ticketed cabin. If you are ticketed for economy, you should be able to reserve any economy seat, unless there is a safety reason (e.g. exit row seating). This is by far one of the biggest scams perpetrated by airlines on consumers, imho.

I had one bag delayed on AA but it came on the next flight a few hours later and was shipped to my hotel. With that being said I don't like this idea at all because in my view it is more government nannying but I do agree with refunding the bag fees though.
