Flying Across the Pond in the 1960s

Worth reading in today's WSJ: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...cott+McCartney

Old folks day on FT! My first internatinal flight was to the Middle East via Europe the day before JFK was shot in November 1963. It was on a PanAm 707 that stopped in Paris, Istanbul, and Beirut. I had on a suit and tie; my wife was similarly dressed and there was smoking on the flight. Some good times and some bad ones.

Did you and your wife have matching ties?

Hate It When . . .

Hate it when I am caught using the wrong words: suitably dressed? One must be a really senior citizen to remember that on many cross-country U.S. and int'l flights many airlines placed little packs of 5 cigarettes on food trays.

I was wondering why this got posted in the DL forum, but then I saw the comparison table at the bottom of the article. If you want to relive the golden age of 1969, all you need to do is fly a PMNW DC-9. Always fun to fly on a jet that has been flying a decade before the pilot was born! :)

Interesting that today compared to 40 years ago there are twice as many US flights flying more than 4 times as many passengers.

Flying in the back of a 727 was something I don't miss very much :D

Back when I was a youngster... late 60s, early 70s, I made my first trip to Europe on Delta via what was then called, the Delta/Pan Am interchange. It was a Pan Am Boeing 707 from Atlanta to Dulles with a Delta Crew. They would then switch crews at Dulles to Pan Am for the flight on the same aircraft to London.

My gosh... NOW I feel really old remembering that.

Flying up front was pretty spacious. I remember one flight DEN-PHL on a TWA 727 in 1974, and I was the only passenger in first class! Royal treatment!!

Really, really, really old.....

My first international flight was pre-jet, as a ten-year-old in 1953, flying SFO-MNL, with stops in HNL, Midway, Wake, Guam. 36 hours. Dress, patent leather shoes, gloves, and hat. The seats made into beds at night, like in a train compartment.

It was either PanAm or Philippine Airlines.

Didn't the tobacco ad wizards spin those "for good digestion" back in the day?
