Alternative Catering Idea

I saw on the KLM forum that they're experimenting with charging 15 euros for a meal to reduce costs and increase profits. While I didn't like the idea or the charge I don't fly KLM so not a big deal for me.
BUT..
I think a better way to cut costs and be more efficient would be to allow passengers to preselect their meal choice 15 days out. Online they can select which meal they'd like from the list of meals available for that flight and lock it in. Any tickets purchased <15 days out require selection at time of purchase and may come with just limited selection availablity. For short distance flights people could select just the available free snack or upgrade to alternatives for a fee which would be paid before the flight. This also avoids the flight attendant from having to do credit card txs or handle cash. On Long distance flights people could select which regular meal they'd like, a special diet meal or possibly be offered a higher end meal for a charge. All prepaid so that there is less tx in cabin. Even in J and F this could be good where you could select from the better menu and make sure you'll get the roast instead of the duck.
Any thoughts? I know there is the idea of what happens if someones meal doesn't arrive. I'm sure after changeover this would be few and far between and catering would of course carry a few extra basic meals for those instances.
