That actually has happened several times. It is rediculous to do this. It would so obvious to the airline that the last people to board the flight will be suspect in making the call.

I'm obsessively early for everything so I've never experienced standing in the security line so close to boarding time that I thought I might miss the flight. I did once realize on the way to airport (unexpected road closure due to an accident) that it was going to be too tight-- and in that case I called the elite desk and had myself put on the next flight.

when i got to the airport 20minutes before dep, all counters closed, the agent asked "can you run?"

made the flight :D
