As a child: Scared of flushing the lavatory

On a recent flight I was thinking back to when I was a child and how I was scared of flushing the toilet on the planes.

Don't remember the airplane types but it was on an early variety 747 (with lounge on top deck) or some Tupolev variety.

Remember hitting that button and then madly trying to open the folding doors and get out.

Anyone else got some stupid childhood aviation moments to share?

I possibly shouldn't admit to this but am gonna :)

When I would fly as a young child, I believed that you could not use the toilets on board during take off and landing, as when the flush was pressed, a hole opened up underneath the aircraft to let the *ahem* "contents" out !! ... and thats how the toilets worked in my little child like opinion :D

I am with you, OP. I was also scared of flushing lavs in RVs and campers. Not sure why, it just seemed like that open hole was a direct pipe to a septic tank of doom.

As a kid, automatic toilets unnerved me as they kept flushing before I finished my business. At one point, I thought I would get sucked into the toilet if it was flushing.

At the time, the only automatic toilets I saw were at the airport so I was nervous if I needed to use the restroom. Fortunately, I grew out of that fear!

When I was a child travelling on airplanes, flushing the toilet was the very last thing I did before leaving the lavatory, thereby muffling part of the flushing process. I will admit it was a bit hard to get used to when I began travelling on planes.

I was scared enough of that ‘power flush’ to hold it until I was back in the terminal. Thank goodness I never traveled internationally as a kid.

I used to fear my passport falling out of my shirt pocket into the commode just as I was flushing.
I now wear a lanyard.

I'm over 30 and I still jump out immediately after the button push before the toilet sucks me out!

I was scared of it too. Especially the 767 because they have a very loud suction. I used to be halfway out the door and reach back in to flush it and quickly shut the door behind me.

I still am now, but for a different reason. I have no problem with the vacuum flush ones. I am scared of those with the blue chemicals. I fear that at the moment I flush, the airplane will hit turbulence and the contents will splash out of the bowl onto me.

I know the solution is to just close the lav lid, but who does that?

I am in my 50's. That toilet sounds dangerous, I do not care how you try to convince me otherwise. It's like the contents of the room are all tied down just to keep them from being sucked out of the lav when flushing. And it lasts for seconds longer than necessary IMO. I do not like it and you can't make me like it. I do not like the air-powered low flush babies at the hotels either, the ones that pull the paper off the rolls if hanging too close.

I still remember flushing a toilet on a train as a child and being startled to see the tracks rushing by through the drain! Turns out on the train that's how they really worked... :)

Ah, the dreaded blue-butt syndrome.

Also, if you find yourself in a lav without TP, this may be why. :D
