747-8: Upper deck...
 

Hi LH forum,

As many of you may already know - Boeing had the first flight of the 747-8 yesterday...

I thought that the upper deck was going to be longer - it looks very similar to the 400 series in this shot? Any idea's, anyone?

Maybe they did the maiden flight with the freighter?
More orders for the cargo version anyway, if I remember correctly.

The 747-8 that had first-flight was an "F" version which is the freighter model. It lacks the extended upper deck.

The first flight aircraft that flew yesterday (and the other test aircraft) are both the freighter model.

Both the passenger and freighter version are stretched 5.6m(18.3ft). Both have a 1.5m behind the wing and a 4.1m stretch in front. On the freighter, the stretch is behind the hump (and actually includes the area where the wing mounts). On the Passenger version, the front stretch is just behind the upper deck emergency exits. so your adding ~8 windows upstairs.

Rough approximation: the "hump" size of the 747-8F's upper deck is visually, the size of the hump of the 400F and older 100/200 series models, although the hump on the 8F seems more tapered. The upper deck of the 747-8 Intercontinental will be somewhat longer than the 747-400.

If you pay attention, the freighter version always have short upper deck even for 747-400,(the upper deck looks like it is a 747-200) as the upper deck for freighter always only use as crew rest area, not for cargo.

For any freighters that have big upper decks, those are converted from pax version like from a 300 or 400, not originally deliver as freighter.

For the search impaired (not referring to ORDnHKG), a 747-400F. Note the winglets characteristics of the -400s (except the -400D).

To add to the confusion. KLM was even converting its pax/combi 747-200s to a stretched upper deck that the 747-300s had.

What's behind those three windows of the "upper deck" on the 747-8F? Are there any pics around of how they've done it? Presumably crew rest/galley?
