Padding, a rigid carrier -- a stiff tube or carton -- plus some waterproof wrapping in case of a leak or breakage. There's always the possibility of theft or accident but it should be fine.

As long as the bottle is packaged well, I would have more concerns about TSA theft than breakage. I do purchase duty free liquor on pretty much every international trip I take and almost always have to re-check it because of ongoing domestic connections, and am fortunate enough to have never had a problem.

I recently checked several bottles on three flights from SPR-BZE-MIA-ORD. I had a 750 mL bottle of rum and four bottles of hot sauce. I just wrapped them all in clothes in my checked bag and they were fine. The bag was even opened by the TSA in MIA - I had the little paper notice when I unpacked - and all was fine.

As a bonus, the TSA went in through the unlocked pocket and didn't cut off my other lock.

I put a bottle of Vodka in my suitcase and it made it home just fine.

I wrapped it in a plastic grocery bag, then tied it and wrapped it in clothes.

Everyone - thanks for the advice!

I ended up double wrapping it in bubble tape and then putting it in an oversized box stuffed with "peanuts" on all sides. than taped the heck out of it. Fingers crossed.

Now I just have to make it out of FWA today - and seeing as the first flight to ORD was already canceled - I am not holding my breath.

Thanks again,
Chad
