Charter isn't really commercial. It's a private plane hired to fly people around.

I would agree with you but this is not a chartered flight. Logan air adjusted their schedule to help out the school kids, but this is regularly scheduled air service.

But it's not in the US so it doesn't count. What's the shortest commercial flight that involves the US?

Yee ha!

Does this include taxi time, or just wheels up / wheels down?

Definitely a commercial flight- my husband and I took it a few years ago. We had lunch at a B&B on the island, owned by a writer and his wife (who doubled as the island's postmaster). He told us about how their kids used to be ferried to school on the mainland and might be gone for a week or so during bad weather.

We loved the flight- we sat right behind the pilot, who circled around a second time after we passed over a prehistoric settlement and my husband couldn't grab his camera fast enough. Here are some pictures from the trip.

We checked to see if they were part of the same alliance as BA/AA, bit couldn't find any way to get points.

They didn't answer any of the pertinent questions:

1) Was there a beverage service?

2) Did everyone's bags make it?

3) Does Logan Air offer a 500 mile minimum?

Not private at all.
It's been a scheduled service for many years. They have just changed the schedule to suit school times.

Indeed, this flight has been around for a long time. A search on "Papa Westray" in FT yields 91 hits, mostly in threads with "shortest" in the title.

I presume you haven't been to the Scottish Islands. I did once have to argue with the "BA on behalf of Loganair" staff at SYY that they should still check me in at T-16 minutes. They said the cut off was T-30 and I pointed out that their ticket was T-20 and I had been waiting at an unmanned desk for 5 minutes. Net result - my bag and I were on the plane, which took off on time.
