Is The US $ Relentless Slide Down Affecting...

your overseas travel plans?

Seems the only places left for a reasonable $ conversion are South America and Mexico.

You want to go where? Oct 13, 2009 4:03 pm

Not yet.

I think it is a little early to call it relentless. It hasn't yet reached its 2008 lows against the Euro. After all, this climb only started in April. That said, no, it hasn't affected my travel plans.

Why... no...

It's actually causing me to go and buy more stuff from the States.... ^

Exchange rates have been known to affect my facial expressions (:( and  being more common recently), but never my actual travel plans.

It hasn't yet brought my exchange rate back to what it was, but yes I'm happy travel to many places is now slightly less unaffordable than it was just 6 months ago.

I am in Japan on business this week. Official rate is 89, the FX rip-off agencies in SFO were welling at 78. I would not even think of coming to Japan for vacation at these rates. Come to think of it, I would not come to Japan on vacation anyway!

It has slightly affected my travel in terms of what I do when I'm on my trips, but it doesn't really affect my choice of destinations.

???

I'm getting a GREAT $ conversion rate when I travel to the USA these days...

No it hasn't in a negative aspect in my travel habits. I still go to the places I really want to go or travel to regularly (France), regardless of the exchange rate being bad for the dollar. However, I would up discovering other places, where the exchange rate is better, that perhaps I would not have looked at if the exchange rate hadn't changed. So, I've found it good (at least for me) because it caused me to expand my travel scope and experiences.

I have made several trips with one more next week to Brazil (Rio). But that is more of a function of cheap fares, triple miles on AA, a nice beach (Ipanema), and lots of hot bodies. The dollar going much further there than Europe is just an added bonus. But if the dollar keeps falling I don't see a summer 2010 Europe trip.
