For problems like this, what I usually do is to go to ITA, switch off (uncheck) the availability checker, and try to get a price. If you can't get a price for a particular routing even when availability is being ignored, then it suggests that there are no valid fares even though the airlines publish the connection (for reasons best known to themselves).

This, I think, may well be what the case is here: there are no valid fares for this routing.

Hi,
That's exactly what I tried to do after posting my message: I set things like that in ITA, in the multi-city tab:
CDG N (direct) f bc=Y (Y allows end on end combinations) BGO
This one give indeed the CDG to BGO Air France flight.

Then I've added:
BGO N f BC=E (E allows end on end combinations) SVG.
And then ITA doesn't find anything.

What is puzzling is that some agencies manage to price that connection, for example www.tripair.fr .

It seems there's a glitch somewhere, but I don't know if it's with FE, ITA, AF, SAS or someone else.

I suspect that ITA doesn't find anything when you add the BGO-SVG sector because there is no valid fare or combination of fares that allows through travel on a single ticket CDG-BGO-SVG, and that that's why ITA returns nothing once you add that sector. Even if a fare allows end-on-end combinations, it may not allow such combinations to all fares.

Some agencies will give you a price for the "connection" because what they're doing is selling you two separate tickets for CDG-BGO-CDG and BGO-SVG-BGO without telling you and without warning you of the consequences of holding two separate tickets, which means that you are not connecting but making two separate and unconnected journeys. Typically, these days, there's no misconnection protection and no through-checking of bags (especially when, as here, the two airlines are in different alliances). This is a hidden trap set by some unscrupulous OTAs. Other possible explanations include that the OTA has access to some private/negotiated fare that allows this routing when no published fare allows it.

What I'm pretty sure is that this is not an EF glitch, as EF faithfully reports that which its GDS sources tell it. This is what EF is good for. As I said, I don't know why this connection is published to the GDSs when there are no valid fares for this journey, although there are possible reasons (eg there are valid fares for XXX-SVG that are routed XXX-CDG-BGO-SVG). But it's published, so EF tells you about it.

I'm also fairly confident that this is not an ITA glitch because for a reasonably simple itinerary like this, where you can strip down the options to narrow the search very closely, ITA will return anything that is bookable so a nil return is a pretty reliable indicator that there is no published fare that is bookable.

when you set up an alert, how often does EF search to see if seats are becoming available?

Several times a day at least, more so as the date/time of the flight gets closer.

Hello all, I've just subscribed to ExpertFlyer looking to get into Business class as much as possible in my long-haul flights. I have AAdvantage Platinum status and am happy to pay the miles for upgrades but am not interested in paying the cash price.

I've browsed around ExpertFlyer a bit and I've noticed how some flights have many seats available but little or no upgrade or award seats available. I've attached a screenshot of an example of this.

My question is this...If some of these seats do not sell, do they become upgrade or award inventory? If so, is there a rule of thumb as to how close to departure they free them up for those trying to upgrade? The example I posted is only a week away. Half the cabin is available but still no upgrade inventory. Any info would be nice, thanks!

Oh, I guess I'm not allowed to post a screenshot until I have 5 posts. I'll get on that

Hello @KevinsDad,

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

Your question was moved from the External Miles & Points Resources forum to the Travel Tools forum, where it has been merged into the relevant thread.

I think this is probably less of an ExpertFlyer question and more of an AA policy question. EF simply reports the inventory which the airline publishes in the reservations systems. You're wanting to know whether/when/how the airline will change the inventory in the different possible booking classes.

The AA board - https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/amer...advantage-733/ - will probably be the best place for that. However, do bear in mind your initial 5-post limit in your first ?24 hours.

Can anyone give me a rundown of the text below or a article/website that explains it? I'm trying to understand what the LXX.XX means and most of the acronyms.

OUT = departure (typically pushback)
OFF = takeoff
ON = landing
IN = arrival (at gate)

L00.04 = late by 00 hours 04 minutes (UA284 was scheduled to depart SFO at 0600 and departed at 0604 - and you will see the other late periods follow the same pattern)

EST = estimated
CXLD = cancelled
DVRT = divert(ed)
ENRT = en route
TerryK and Calchas like this.

I'm less sure about the first. I suspect that it means that the flight was held for connecting passengers. I was sceptical about this at first, but it looks like SFO has arrivals starting at 0415 so that makes it plausible.

I don't know when the estimated off time was filed, but it was only a minute out in the end.

I imagine the "PROT" line refers to some sort of UA policy.

The format for the last two lines is actually:-
Code:
SKED SFO ORIG 600A GTD 71A SHIP 3824
      SAN   738A  TERM      GTA   42
That makes it clearer that these are the original scheduled (SKED) times of the flight. The SFO and SFO gate numbers are given (71A and 42) - these repeat the EF headline information that appears before you ask for additional information - and the ship/fleet number 3824 (select the 39 tab) is a plausible match for the registration of the aircraft: N69824.

Most of this is pretty intuitive to decode once you've seen it in operation.
Calchas likes this.

BA award availability not shown on EF

Looking at BA award availability for London to Edinburgh over a week in November, EF showns no availability in Economy or Business on any flight on any day.
However, the BA website shows availability on most flights every day. (This is standard economy award availabilty. I don't have Gold status with BA and don't have access to the extra award availability for Gold members. And the award availability shown on the BA website is real - I've just booked a flight.)

I see that similar problems have been reported in the past. Has any solution been found?
KVS shows exactly the same availability as the BA website but I'd like to be able to set up alerts for award availability and KVS doesn't have that function.

ExpertFlyer does show BA award inventory for BA operated flights:

We don't screen scrape from the BA website, we show the reservation system published data. If there is an issue where BA isn't publishing something correctly then they will fix it. If you want to ever ask us to investigate a search then please email us directly at [email protected] instead of posting to FT so we can look up your account, thanks.

Thanks. EF is now showing Economy award availability for the flights from LHR and LGW (but as you say not LCY) to EDI but still doesn't show any of the available award inventory in Business. That problem appears to apply to all dates not just November.
Yes, I could report problems like this to you by email in future but of course it requires cross-checking my EF award searches against the BA website to know it there is a problem and that rather defeats the purpose of using EF in the first place!
I'd be interested in the experience of any other FT members who've regularly searched for BA award availability on EF. Have you been able to get reliable accurate results?
