Google Voice on Android and BB
|
Interesting concept taking Google Voice mobile:
http://www.informationweek.com/news/...leID=218500501 The Google Voice app will allow users to use their mobile phones to access their inbox, place calls and send SMS messages with their Google Voice number, and make low-rate international calls. When sending SMS messages in this manner, users don't have to pay SMS charges levied by their mobile carriers because the SMS messages are sent by Google. Looks like they beat Skype to the BB market, plus I love the ability for avoiding SMS fees when roaming international. |
Maybe it's just me (a TMo BB Curve without an extra installed memory card operating with a good to very good EDGE Signal). But, i installed the software on my BB and immediately after the install, my BB REALLY SLOWED DOWN down to a CRAWL.
When I ran the app, there was significant lag between keypad entries of my GVoice/Google ID and password and the keystrokes appearing on the screen. Once i completely entered my GVoice/Google ID and password and clicked/selected "Login" or "Next" (or whatever) in the app (presumably to login to my account) my BB froze. Had to pull the battery out to get it to unfreeze and restart. I deleted the app shortly thereafter. I'm still feeling out GVoice so such immediate access via a BB app is really not an essential for me, for now. |
The app is great on my G1 - the free GV app (not made by Google) was good, but this one is great :)

It runs ok on my Bold. I like the speed at which you can dial through Google. It must pass the call information via data so that by the time that you dial their portal, the system knows where to send the call.
What I don't like is that there is does not appear to be push notification of incoming text messsages to your Google Voice account. |
Yes, I received no notification of incoming SMS messages to GV either.
|
I'm still waiting for my invite for Google Voice :(

You definitely should be receiving notification of incoming text messages once you upgraded to Google Voice. That was one of the big benefits of upgrading.
|
Installed it last night and it works great on my BB Curve 8900.
|
Sorry, what I meant was I got no notification in the BB app of incoming SMS. SMS to GV is forwarded to the BB, and shows up online, but not in the history listing in the app.
|
Day 2. I've noticed that when an inbound SMS shows up, there is a an "*" on the GV icon, but the alert light doesn't blink and there is no sound. I'm wondering whether the Blackberry alerter program can fix this.
Texts with the US is perfect, but I'm currently in Trinidad and tested both sending and receiving with a Trini SIM. the results were more mixed. |
