Anyone on DSL extreme? How is it?

Hi

I was going to change my Verizon over to DSL exteme since they seem to have better speeds for the same cost,

Its on the same DSL line anyway,

Any reason NOT to do it ?

Anyone found a way to get Verizon to match DSL Extremes rates ?

And lastly any DSL Extreme discount codes ?

Thanks for yout thoughts

It may be the same wires but that doesn't mean it is the same service. It will terminate on a different DSLAM in the TelCo office and you'll be using their backbone and peering arrangements rather than Verizon's. And you get the customer service from the other company, too.

I know nothing about the company and I'd suggest going over to the forums at DSLReports.com to get better info on that front, but it is important to know that it isn't simply the same connection just because it is on the same wire into your home.

:confused:Are you sure about this part specifically? My understanding was that they are reselling the Verizon DSL infrastructure, in the same way that they are with the FIOS service. On this basis they would be using the normal Verizon DSLAM and there would be a handover (NNI) into the DSLX network somewhere further back into the Verizon network.

You are correct on the other points though, definitely.

Not 100% and I actually didn't look into it too closely; I just assumed that it was similar to most of the other ISPs out there and the way they operate. It could be on the same DSLAM but that is a relatively trivial part of the differences.

In the 2 years I have had Verizon DSL I have never needed customer servise , so the lines etc are pretty good around here,

I also do not use a Verizon email address (I use gmail), so that is not a concern,

It would be interesting to know if DSL Extreme just uses Verizons infrastructure, buys in bulk and do their own billing,

Actually no. Most ISPs resell the underlying LEC infrastructure and only operate their own IP networks, which start further back into the cloud. It is a fairly major differentiator as there is often significant contention at the DSLAM level. Using an ISP that operates their own infrastructure can make a huge difference to this, as well as the range of products / speeds available. Verizon and other LECs usually operate a lowest common denominator in terms of products and speeds, unlike smaller more agile competitors that have their own DSLAMs.

Note that there are hardly any of these CLECs left in the US anymore that operate their own infrastructure.

Not sure if you meant AT&T DSL Extreme, since they offer a DSL Extreme product, but I have it. I've had the 6.0 mbps line for about 18 months and love it. I consistently move gigabytes of traffic through SSL tunnels at 5 mbps consistently, sometimes a bit faster. Overall, I'm very satisfied with what I get for $39 a month AI with a dry loop line. I had to call AT&T once when my line was a day late being activated, but since then it has worked excellent provided I reboot the modem every two weeks or so.

My only complaint is I can't get a standalone 18 mbps DSL line in my location.

I was NOT asking about the AT+T product,
but DSLextreme.com

Good to here that the AT+T 6.0 mbps line works so well

Are you referring to the Uverse 18mbps DSL line? If so, all you have to do is signup, and then cancel the TV portion, they'll let you keep the DSL only.
