Laptop model/configuration discrepancy.

The box that the laptop came in says it's model Acer Aspire 2410-2597 (2410 sereies). The Laptop itself says its Model 2410z. THe two models have slightly different configurations. The 2410 series can have maximum 4GB of memory and the 2410Z can have max 2 GB. The manufacturer's website is silent and quite useless. They are not willing to give any support now that the laptop is out of warranty.
Crucial's website also shows 2 GB max for model 2410Z. When I run their scanning software, it says it's model 2410 and that it can support max 4GB. To make it worse, according to crucial's scan 2410 does not support dual channel mode, but 2410z does. The owner's manual says both 2410 and 2410z support dual channel mode.
How do I resolve this? I ran CPU-Z. Comparing the hardware information given by CPU-Z with the description in the owner's manual (which describes a 4 different models), I tend to think it's 2410Z. When the computer was under warrany, I was quite busy at work and id not use this laptop much. Now I find myself sing it more and would like to upgrade the memory. How do I resolve this discrepancy?

How does one tell, by looking at the lbel on the memory, or the memory stick itsel;f, whther it'
s dual channel or not? The two memory banks are of different colour, one is black an one is white. That makes me think it does support dual channel mode. But how do I find out if the installed memory is dual channel memory?

I once had an Acer and had model info problems as you have. I assumed these things were made by serfs working outta 1000 dungeons by dim candlelight using parts made in the same way. I would pull the old memory, google its parts number and buy Lenovo etc in the future.

Thanks for your advice. I could only get at the memory. I was unable to remove the back panel. I looked at the users manual, in PDF, and looked at the types of CPU, motherboard etc (for each of the 4 models) and compared wit with what control panel showed and with 9410Z and concluded that it would max out at 2GB and that it does support dual channel mode. Then I called a local brick and mortar store and asked them I want to try their 2GB and 4GB dual channel memory and that I would return it. THeir memory is quite pricey. When I put the 4GB memory, the laptop would just wait.... and wait after power on. Nothing happened for a few minutes. I turned it off and checked to see if the memory modules were seated right. and turned it back on with the same results. Then I tried the 2GB dual channel memory and powered the laptop. It started like a charm. It works better with multiple applications and turns off much quicker. Thanks for the advice, once again. BIOS, as well as control panel and CPU-Z recognise 2GB. How do I tell if it's working in dual channel mode? I think it is, becuase if it were not, 2GB would not be faster than one GB, if the oriignal 1GB was operating in dual channel mode. However, if the originally installed memory and the new 2GB memory are both NOT operating in dual channel mode, I would see the improvement. Is there anyway to tell if it's running in dual channel mode?

Thanks, once again.

did you install a 2x 2GB for the 4GB? or a 1x 4GB stick or memory?

I tried 2x2GB and 2x1GB since they were dual channel. SO 4GB is not supported by the motherboard.
