Unlock Iphone Options
It seems there will be NO Iphone Nano coming out anytime soon or the 32GB. So I better get a replacement back soon. (Refer to my first thread - my 16GB got stolen!)
My options are: 1) get it in HK for 6000HKD (around 850USDish) Pro = unlock and I can use it anywhere I want Con = HIGH PRICE 2) get in UK (Pay as you go version) for £391.45 (around 575.12USD) Pro = Cheaper price Con = Locked to the O2 network (which is where my exisiting Iphone contract is with, however I will be leaving UK for good later this year, so....) Any other options??? Just wondering what do you think is best? |
You heard about yellowsn0w, right? (if not, google it)
|
Get an unlocked version in Italy. Equally high price (600euro?).
|
I've decided to get the Iphone from UK for 391.45GBP and when I need it in HK I will get it unlock (for just around 200HKD = 20GBP)
Do you guys think the price will drop anytime soon? |

If you haven't already bought the UK one, my preference would be to spend the extra dough and get the official unlocked phone. If you buy that one, it will always stay unlocked and will still entitle you to full support, etc. I have learned that hacking, etc. may save you a few dollars in the short run but if you have mission critical needs, its just not worth the hassle of the potential problems (at least to me). I did have a original iphone that I used unlocked successfully for at least 6 months however. |
Wirelessly posted (dell axim: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)
Has anyone on here used YellowsnOw successfully themselves yet? Did it work 1st time? |

No need to pay to unlock it if you already own a locked one. yellowsn0w will do it for you. Good instructions at iclarified dot com.

This is almost TWICE the amount for the Locked UK Official model. In Hk you can also get: 1) Unlock (Jail Broken) versions 2) Unlock version - not jail broken - not supported by Apple. |

In HKG this week I found locked US 3G iPhones for sale cheap at $3200.
Can one buy an iPhone in the UK without a contract? |

Well that what the little device in the window was labeled as anyways. ;) Very realistic looking and only $640. I didn't bother asking to see the OS.

That is 640 HKD? Or $640 in USD equivalent? I'm assuming the former...

I think the NZ version is sold unlocked, if you can get one. Haven't checked prices recently, but I think it works out to be under USD$700. (~USD$660?)

Can one buy an iPhone in the UK without a contract? I went through the whole mall at mong kok and the cheapest I find is around 4300HKD. 3200 sounds too cheap to be true. Also the source of these US 3G iphones are also questionable since I thought there are no PAYG option in the US? Anyway I bought my PAYG Iphone yesterday at the Regent Street Apple store for 391GBP. I must say the Apple store people are full of shi* Firstly they claim that I CAN'T put in my O2 contract SIM into the PAYG iphone (and tried to change the Celluar data settings to payandgo.o2.co.uk) Secondly they claim you have to top up EVERY month for a minimum of 10GBP to keep the PAYG SIm active? I have tested my Iphone with the O2 contract SIM and it works fully (WIFI, 3G) As for the minimum topup, I have confirmed with O2 and they said u only have to make 1 call every 6 months to keep the PAYG active. How come the Apple geeks don't even know what they sell (which is the reason I never want to change to a Mac) |

If they didn't know about the handset's features, well that would be a different story. |

Sorry if the answer is obvious, but why did you want a PAYG iphone if you have an O2 contract?

I wouldn't expect them to know the details of O2's service plan to be honest. Thats O2's responsibility as network provider.
If they didn't know about the handset's features, well that would be a different story. ALSO I find their knowledge (even in the Genius Bar) is not that good and often they will jsut tell u to restore the phone or make up some BS excuse. |
