Idiot Garmin programmers
I can't believe how stupid the Garmin programmers are... either that, or they have a level of arrogance which is astounding.
I've had a Nuvi for a year and a half, I've been quite happy with it. The maps were getting old- missing a lot of new subdivisions and new roads I use, and the coffee shop listings are out of date... so I bought the update, which comes on a DVD... went to install it. On windows machines it will ONLY install from the C: drive. You do not have any option to change the installation drive. It requires about 3 GB. On my primary computer the C: drive is only for the system, with enough space for system and swap files; everything else goes on other drives (one drive for apps, one for data, one for photos... makes for good organization and easier backups). So, it is impossible to install from this computer. 2nd computer- laptop- no DVD drive and anyway no space 3rd computer- similar config, but 4GB free on the C drive. The Garmin install still insists it needs another 420 mg of space, even after clearing out everything and reducing the swap file size. So it won't install there. I'll have to do it from my wifes computer tomorrow; I don't like installing anything extra on hers, I try to keep it with a lean and clean setup, but I'm forced to. I can't recall any program I've installed in the past 10 years or more that doesn't let me choose the destination drive. What is wrong with those, um, ... help me out here- I need a word much stronger than idiot, but one which doesn't violate the TOS. |

As for how to install it: Download Microsoft Virtual PC. (It's a free download) Install a new OS inside it, install to that. |

Mega-Idiot, perhaps?

It really is a giant PITA to do the Garmin Map updates..... What I don't understand is the bluetooth updates that are pushed to me every two weeks. |
Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry9000/4.6.0.167 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)
It comes on a dvd... They shouldn't be making us install it to the HD to begfin with. I see no reason why the maps shouldn't extract straight to the device. I'm really liking the Garmin software for BlackBerry so far. Maps are OTA so you get updates for life. |
