You can disable UAC as well.
I'd use Vista 64 bit if using over 4G ram or XP if using 3G ram or less.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry8700c: BlackBerry9000/4.6.0.190 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/120)

I just can't understand why any home user, for now, is willing to sacrifice the general compatibility of a 32 bit OS versus some hypothetical gain of a >4gb RAM system. The vast majority of home users gain little from more than 4 gig of ram unless they're photoshop kings.

To further that comment, there's a "aftermarket" version of XP called "XP Performance Edition" available on various Torrent networks that strips out almost all of the crap included in a standard XP package these days (legacy drivers, Windows Messenger cruft, etc). I can't recommend this highly enough - it is super fast and I know it's not bogged down with things that will slow down a brand new PC needlessly. ANY new PC I get now is wiped clean and gets this Performance Edition loaded immediately.

While I have no real objection to Vista, I simply do not want to go through the hassle of using drvers that are still effectively in Beta for many products. My scanner and printer for example still haven't ironed out Vista driver bugs. For no practical benefit, why would I bother with Vista when the XP drivers work perfectly. (Same goes for 64-bit OSes as well)

Everything is still there for the most part and there is some logic to it though it just takes some time to get used to. The one except to that is if you are a big big power user of Excel I hear there are some things that they really changed that ticked off heavy users. Compared to Vista everything seems to look a little bit nicer though underneath everything is pretty much where it used to be.

If you're like me and couldn't find some stuff in Office 2007, go to Microsoft Office Labs and download "search commands". This is one of those little things MS puts out without fanfare that really work.

"Eudora for Vista"? I don't think there's a Vista-specific version of Eudora. And version 8 is based off of the same platform as Mozilla Thunderbird.

Qualcomm stopped releasing updates for Eudora in October 2006... which IIRC is before Vista was introduced.

Give it up. xp is dead. if you throw all the garbage out, vista is about as fast.

My M$ "big bad global company" SE still runs XP on every PC he has that are actually -his- (as opposed to his company laptop). That, and all my own anecdotal evidence seem to indicate that Vista is not faster unless you run it on a 2+ core machine with a ton of RAM.

I have xerox printers. my n32's and n40's are probably 10 years old. they run fine. i have xerox 60xx color printers. they are probably 5 years old. they run fine. hp's are disposable printers. if they don't run, just throw the junk out.
HP's entry level printers are garbage. I have a 10 year old 1100A that's still kicking, and our offices have dozens (if not hundreds) of Laserjet 4s, Laserjet 4000s, and even a few Laserjet 3s still kicking around. Those things will go to the scrap heap on top of PCs 15 years their junior. And Vista would not drive a bunch of those printers when Vista was first released. Unacceptable.

That said, I know of at least 3 different Fortune 250 firms (well over 250k client machines in total) that are skipping Vista entirely and will upgrade when 7 comes out and not before. XP ain't dead yet.

Similar to XP Lite, I wonder?

Very similar I'm sure. XP Lite is of course more "legal" in the conventional sense :)

I will dissent here. An absolute prerequisite for buying a laptop for me is the ability to downgrade to XP. My Intel Core 2 Duo Vista media center runs slower than my four year old P4 on XP. The "improvements" to vista are largely like the "improvements" to your frequent flyer programs.... Which is to say, with improvements like these who needs bugs! Almost every single "improvement" goes into the annoying column instead of the useful column.

Just one cheapo's 2 cents.

I agree - Vista offer nothing but aggravation for little or no advantage. Worth downgrading and doing a clean install. You will get faster response and more stability. Biggest challenge can be the support form the OEM you purchase from as oftentimes the drivers are hard to find for XP if it was sold as a Vista Machine

My IT department has encouraged me to use the downgrade that came with the computer when I first got it, but I wanted to use the latest and greatest. After 8 weeks I acquiesced and I could not be happier!! Everything is faster and I am happy!!^

I thought the entire TZ series was recalled.
