Gmail Themes

Browsing my email today and saw a new note at the top with options to set up Gmail Themes- a very  innovation- Currently I have mine set to planets and its awesome how the color scheme is integrated with the background image. Now only if we could change the background image :D

Also, I like how the images change on the location... but haven't seen how dynamic it is yet... ie- is it tied to weather, time of day, etc...

...And a little more searching answered my question:

Themes allow you to customize the look and feel of your Gmail account. To choose a theme, click a thumbnail on the Themes tab of your Settings page.

In some cases, you can also customize by location. Some themes change during the day, and we use the location information you provide to correctly time these changes with your local sunrise, sunset, and/or weather. If you select one of these themes, you'll see a Country/Region drop-down menu appear. Select the country you want, and then enter a city in the field provided. If you don't enter a city, or enter an invalid one, we'll set your location to the capital city of the country you selected. When you're done, click Save.

Its kind of fun. Wish it was there for my Google Apps accounts. Though oh well. I usually just check it in a mail client anyways through IMAP.

One other interesting thing is not all gmail accounts allow this yet... several friends of mine don't have it yet (mine started April 06)... and also N/A to several newer ones I possess... must be a metered roll-out...

There's an option to participate in Google Labs experimental projects, which enables some beta additions to Gmail, but I don't see the themes option anywhere...where do you go to choose it?

I guess I don't get it. But then I never understood why there is such a big deal about various programs having all kinds of "skins." Just give me the information.

True...my perspective, too. I don't think I'd actually use the themes, since I don't really bother with skins, either, but it's always nice to see Google's clever implementation of things.

Most 'skins' I don't really care about, such as firefox's... and now that I think about it - this may be similar... but its still a cool google innovation. I like the fact they are supposed to be dynamic and change according to the weather/time of day for a specific location. Haven't tested it long enough though to form a concrete opinion though.

In gmail at the top is a series of links in the far right corner:

[email protected]|Settings|Older Version|Help|Sign Out

Click Settings

There will now be displayed another series of links:

General|Accounts|Labels|Filters|Forwarding and POP/IMAP|Chat|Web Clips|Labs|Themes

Click Themes

If Themes is not an option... I guess its not been implemented for your account yet... however if it works... you should see 31 clickable themes ranging from pebbles to ocean to terminal, and at the bottom one can change their city & country.

And be sure to click save when done-

Cheers!

Ah, Themes is not an option for me. I guess Google, in its infinite wisdom, doesn't think I'm worthy of seeing it...

I don't have the themes option either.

On a related note, Firefox users have available to them a very cool add-in called Google Redesigned that provides a slick look to both GMail and Google Calendar.

So I tried my last 'trick' and it did not work with another gmail account I have... so I guess I get to believe y'all now :p

Curious_George Nov 20, 2008 1:41 pm

The terminal theme is pretty cool, but very hard on my eyes. I changed mine to the tea house theme.

cblaisd Nov 20, 2008 1:47 pm

I'm partial to "Classic" :D

Although, if I'm feeling really wild, I can be talked into "Default"

magiciansampras Nov 20, 2008 1:49 pm

Apparently it takes awhile to propagate to all the gmail servers and such.

Looks like they’re enabled on my account. Thanks for the heads up!

Same here, but I was able to find a theme (Shiny) similar to what I use with Windows (Silver) that has a nice contrast, at least to my eyes. I was trying out Google Chrome for a short time before I realized I couldn’t change the blue skin to something else. It just blended in with the desktop background that is the default on my ThinkPad.
