Superior to the Ipod in so many ways. Which model?

miamitreo Nov 1, 2008 12:54 pm

I don't have a specific model in mind yet, although I think I would like at least 30 gigs of hard drive space. What makes it better than the ipod touch. I know what the Ipod touch offers and almost nothing about the Archos PMP.

Please explain, thanks

In my experience, the hardware and features of the Archos devices beats any iPod, but their user interface and customer support keep me from buying their products.

They also have a nasty habit of making too many features add-on, which means you'll have to often drop an additional $50-$60 just to enable stuff that should have been there from day one.

I have enjoyed Archos products I have used but ScottC is correct about their customer support. Very poor.

I have been using the AV700 for about two years and love it.

Fly UA PS in C or F and try one out. Although it is a slightly brain damaged version.

The interface is ugly. And the larger ones seem really heavy. They're acceptable if they're handing it to you in PS, but I wouldn't want to schlepp one around if I'm traveling light. I used mine for a while after I bought it, but then the iPhone came out and the Archos hasn't left the drawer. If you can live with the smaller screen, renting a movie on an iPhone or Touch seems a lot easier.

I'm also in the Ipod Touch vs. Archos train, aren't the Archos more expensive? for me money is kind of important and as far as I have searched, they're at least 50 bucks more expensive aren't they?

They might be comparable or a little more than a Touch, but the storage is much more. A 16GB Touch is $299 and uses flash memory. A 6 inch screen Archos might have a 160GB hard drive. Also, a hard drive might break if dropped but flash memory won't.

Generally the Archos machines have exponentially more memory than Ipod's for the same price. Archos is generally 2-3 years ahead on features and their boxes are far more "open". The advent of paid for modules is a pain, but they have priced it all so they are still generally better deals than Ipod's. No question that Archos has more memory since that much flash memory would cost a fortune. And yes, the boxes are more open because they're not part of an 'ecosystem' like the iPod, but really... 2-3 years ahead on features? What do you base that on? Just using the browser on my Archos is painful.

hfly Nov 4, 2008 1:46 pm

I'm basing it on my old AV480 and then 4100 having 80 and 100GB of memory when Ipods had 30GB max, and didn't come close for another two years. Also that I was watching video on my archos about 2 years before the video Ipod, which had a screen four times the size and three times the memory. 'Ecosystem' yeah, the Archos can play most Codecs, Apples cannot, its limitations, not "ecosystems".

I have a 160GB 504 - it's great to use and not difficult to rip to. Agree that all the add-ons are a pain but I find it flexible and great for travelling though it certainly won't fit in your pocket!

I've tried the Archos on the AA transcon flights. Find the interface very slow! And the machine heavy.

Right now we carry a portable DVD player and then another case of DVDs for my daughter. Itouch is too small.

Any other suggestions apart from Archos?

If Archos it the best choice, which model would you recommend?
