But honestly, yes that is really exactly the type of thing is for. I use mine to watch shows, recorded, setup, etc for all my directv dvr's from anywhere in the world, on computer, ipad iphone, etc.

OK. Something I heard gave me the impression I had to somehow move the stored program on the DVR to the Slingbox first.

re: "for all my directv dvr's from anywhere in the world"

So, to be clear, you have 1 Slingbox setup that enables you to see programs stored on either of your DirecTV DVRs?

Whatever you can do sitting in front of your TV with your remote control you can do on your PC using Slingbox. When you launch slingbox it actually brings up a picture of your remote control on your PC screen.

So yes you can either watch live TV or view DVRd movies/shows.

Great Product, been using mine for 3-4 years now.

Thanks!

nmenaker Jul 18, 2012 7:19 am

But i will say, the directv dvr's have to be close to each other AND the slingbox in order for ONE slingbox to be able to stream from either of them.(unless you use MRV with your directv account) I don't use MRV, but have TWO DVR in the LR, and one slingbox streams their content. I do have ANOTHER slingbox in the BR that streams from the DVR in that room. It is a bit overkill, but I have a lot of SB's in the house regardless.

If you pay for multiroom viewing you can watch content on any DVR in the house as long as your Slingbox is hooked to a single Directv receiver which can access DVR content. I have 4 boxes in my house. 2 are DVR units, two are H24 units that don't have their own hard drives. The H24 units can still access DVR content though, so I hooked the slingbox to the unit that my wife uses the least.

Not exactly. I have a Slingbox Pro HD, which I've had for several years, so I don't know if the inputs have changed. The Slingbox is an analog-input device. My Pro HD has component inputs for HD, and an S-video and composite input for non-HD material. You can plug in up to three video devices, one HD and two standard definition, and switch between them, which would allow plugging in two DirecTV DVRs. However, presumably, your DVRs are in different rooms, which means you'll have to find a way to get the analog signal from each to the Slingbox.

Why would you want to connect multiple DVRs?

All the SlingPlayer descriptions (Android, IOS, Kindle Fire) note that it only works with the SlingBox SOLO and the Slingbox PRO-HD. But it's definitely worth a shot to contact Amazon customer service to see if you can get a credit.

tikiboy Jul 18, 2012 10:54 pm

They did. I was "issued a refund in the amount of $16.41 as a one-time exception". I don't think it's worth upgrading to the new SOLO. I'll just read books on my Fire.

Rampo Jul 20, 2012 1:09 pm

On occasion refurbished SOLOs pop up on sites like woot or dealnews in the $90-$100 range but, speaking as a fairly satisfied SOLO owner, I have to admit that the availability of Netflix and Hulu on pretty much any portable device these days makes the whole Slingmedia universe much less attractive than it once was.

nmenaker Jul 20, 2012 1:22 pm

Apple does refunds all the time, I would imagine the others will too. Even though the SPlayer for iphone says SOLO or ProHD only, it still works with the Pro version of the slingboxes.

Pat89339 Oct 15, 2012 1:08 pm

In the email from Slingbox introducing the all new slingboxes, in small print:

"In honor of the launch all SlingPlayer apps are $14.99."

It doesn't say how long it will last.

Speaking of the new Slingboxes:

Sling Media officially unveils the Slingbox 350 and 500

Slingbox upgrade program

bchandler02 Oct 15, 2012 3:36 pm

Anyone have one yet? (A 350 or 500)

I need to replace my A/V (thank you sling for your planned obsolescence due to the Android tablet app not supporting).

I'm looking at the 350 to replace it. I considered the ProHD but there are known quality issues with those, and I also can't help but think Sling will abandon support for them too. The Monsoon Vulkano products look interesting, read some great things about them, but it seems the software interface isn't as good.

robroy90 Oct 15, 2012 5:46 pm

I almost bought a 500, and ironically I had a Pro HD that is only 3 months old die on me today. They are sending a warranty replacement, but dealing with their "support" is painful. So, the reliability issues I can validate. I have had another Pro HD unit for years and it hasn't skipped a beat.

For those who see the siren's song of HDMI in and out, be advised that there are HDCP issues with it, and it is really intended for passthrough. Their own support video on setup alludes to the HDMI issues for streaming and suggests that you connect component also. Copy protection is just one big bag of hurt...

I have never tried Monsoon, but they just look like a cheap hack to me.

Then you are missing out. The current generation boxes are amazing - and they also power the new Belkin @TV. I stepped away from Sling ages ago, they are just not worth it. The five years of no innovation, $30 apps and lousy build quality were just too much to deal with.

wco81 Oct 15, 2012 7:02 pm

I looked at the Monsoons a couple of years ago. Did they come out with new hardware (and software) recently?

bchandler02 Oct 16, 2012 7:17 am

I picked up a 350 last night. So far, the biggest issue I have with it is they force you to view via the website, instead of via local software like the older units. Not sure how I feel about that yet and people seem to be saying they have a lot of downtime with that website.

I myself haven't noticed a lot of downtime but I can still view my Slingbox Pro with the software and use that exclusively when I travel. For some reason the software doesn't work in my house on the local LAN and then I have to use the web site.

bchandler02 Oct 16, 2012 9:18 am

The ProHD/Solo were the last models/series to use the desktop software. The new 350, 500, and the Dish Network adapter all require web only viewing.

The Vulkano line of units is quite impressive - WiFi, HDMI out, media player, DVR (records to USB/SD or SATA) and best of all, free mobile players.

bchandler02 Oct 16, 2012 9:34 am

I believe they are now chargin $12.99 for the mobile clients now.

AlfredVachris Oct 16, 2012 9:38 am

good product,

i have clients who are xpats and love us television.

also used it for clients to watch live tv in their cars.

Only on the cheapest players - the mobile clients for mine (and for my Belkin @TV) are still free.

I didnt read this whole thread but i looked into this and ruled out it.

The rationale? Hotels Wi - fi usually will not support streaming, many hotels will actually monitor your data usage and lock your MAC address of your device out of the internet after you watch about 20 minutes of video. The process for getting it back up and running requires a phone call, a hold time, an explanation, and usually begging for forgiveness.

Doesnt make much since to invest in a sling box when even if your home internet can handle it you have almost no chance of being able to use it due to the wi fi on the other end.

Not that AT&Ts 4g LTE is in so many cities, a simple netflix app and my grandfathered unlimited data plan are a much better solution. (even if it means watching reruns)

bchandler02 Oct 17, 2012 8:58 pm

I've never had a problem with them shutting me down. The last time I stayed in a Motel6, they told me they were blocking P2P traffic, but otherwise it was fine. Watched a few hours via Slingbox.

I've stayed at Novotel, Mercure, Sheraton, Hampton, Holiday Inn, Aloft, Marriott, Best Western, Quality Inn, and Hiltons within the last few years. Aside from a few that didn't have enough bandwidth to download a .txt file, not one was a problem for my SB.

nmenaker Oct 19, 2012 8:35 am

I have a couple of the new 500's, they work pretty nicely. I do like the ability to setup via TV and not having to use a computer and having it work over wifi is nice, no cables. YES and HDMI (which others have had for several versions) I haven't really had any HDCP issues yet, other than a couple HBO issues.

I HAVE found they work with my slingplayer for MAC and for PC, so not sure why they wouldn't. And yes, they don't TECHNICALLY work with slingcatcher yet, but there is a work around if one searches hard enough.

Not sure if it was here, but you can change the name of the unit via the web player, just go to settings, info and click on the name on the bottom right. change to whatever you like.

bchandler02 Oct 19, 2012 9:54 am

How did you get it to work with the PC/MAC version of Slingplayer? (not web based)

I'll admit I am not tech savvy, but I don't feel like this product has been creating much attention when it has much potential. Is it just me or does anyone else feel like that? I just noticed that this thread was started in 2008, but I came to know of it only this year. I have had cable TV with a DVR for the past two years and never knew of this.

I like things that don't have darned monthly fees and this is something that has caught my attention.

I've had slingbox since v1. Also did a lot of beta testing for them back when I was on a Palm Treo phone. I've also used it from all around the world even in Beijing. I've never had any issues and even over hotel WiFi but if they have an ethernet plug I plug in. In the past few years with the advent of HDMI TVs in hotels I carry an HDMI cable and connect my MacBook Air to the TV and can watch on a regular TV. Worth every penny.

I too have had slingbox since v1. Recently, I have been unable to connect my iPad App over hotel wifi. However, I also have the iPhone app on my iPad and using that I am able to connect. So far it has just been one hotel, but since airlines can block streaming on plane wifi, I wonder whether this is the same type of situation. I have not upgraded the iphone app on the ipad, in case that is the reason.

It is nice to be able to see what's going on back home (local news, etc.) and also to catch up on the shows I have backlogged on my tivo while on the road.

these days I'm just carrying a Roku HDMI stick, and slinging my ipad or iphone to the Roku and watching my Slingboxes that way. And now that the slingplayer app does BACKGROUND PLAYBACK, I can stream a show and do something else with the phone or ipad.

wco81 Apr 21, 2014 7:19 pm

Does the Roku work like AppleTV with the iPad? Like you can stream AirPlay apps?

I see that it comes with Netflix, HBO GO, Hulu Plus, etc.

Would I be able to stream my Tivos through the Tivo iPad app. and then send it over to the Roku stick?

Certainly would be easier to use at a hotel than an AppleTV.

Maybe, I haven't tried my tivo that way. but on Roku there is a Slingplayer app, but it requires an iphone or ipad app to support it.

sort of like a chromecast functionality, but requires a 2nd app to support.

Also can run on Android.

I got one last year, I've been extremely happy with it. I've got it set up at my parents house so that I can still watch Packers games during the season. It has come in handy during longer layovers as well.

The app is unfortunately $15, but works well.

Love my slingbox

I'm A FREQUENT international traveler and previously use HMA VPN to connect to my cable company on demand to watch my shows. I love my TV shows. I heard about slingbox but I honestly didn't believe it would work as my VPN connections were often interrupted with horrible buffering. Anyway, one day a friend showed me (while we were in the US) how he connected. It looked easy enough, although still a disbeliever, but I went out the next day and purchased the cheaper model, only to return it later the same day for the 500 which already had the wifi in it.

I've been in hong Kong and Taiwan for the past week staying at a Marriott and then a Hyatt and here to say it works great. I can't believe how much easier it is to use than the HMA VPN. I do have a dedicated DVR at home so I'm not competing to use it when the family is home watching. I'm twelve hours ahead of EST. I did enjoy watching my HEAT win the other day watching LIVE from my hotel room.

I find live TV streams best (but with my 12 hr time change, there isn't much I want to watch live when I'm awake), then shows I've taped on my DVR stream okay, with On Demand streaming there are some buffering issues now and then; but not all that bad.

Its so worth the cost. I just find it amazing I can do everything from Taiwan to my DVR/TV in So Flo. Amazing.

I think we're talking about a different thing. I wasn't referring to the actual slingbox in my post above, only the fact that indeed armed with a slingplayer app (ios, android, windows mobile) one can easily send the stream to a Roku device connected to a tv.

The slingbox device is of course located elsewhere.
