8/16/08: Temp Solution to Free AVG 8.0 Update Problem (.bin File Missing)

Just FYI, if you are a freebie-lover and using free AVG like me. :o

One of the update files (u7iavi1616oo.bin) is causing problems. I google and found some answers and a solution from another board (dslreports: source).

AVG has pulled the file from public download. AVG is aware of the issue and is working to correct the matter.

Reinstalling will not resolve the issue

Found this solution on the yahoo answers forum from member intc_escapee and it worked for me:

1) go to »www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update
2) make a directory on your desktop called AVG
3) download AVI: 270.6.4
4) download IAVI: / 1616
5) move the dowloaded files to the directory you made called AVG
6) launch AVG
7) select tools -> update from directory
8) select the directory called AVG where you put the downloads

That's it. Should be fixed.
I think step 2): make a AVG directory is the same as making an AVG folder. At least that's what I did and I saved those two files there. It worked! Hope this helps some other using-free-AVG FTers. :)

Maybe AVG will release some official fixes next Monday.

You are welcome, even though I cannot take credit for "solving this problem!" I only went online and found a workable solution. I gave credits to the right parties in my original post. :)

Hope you will find tons of info and advice on miles & points from this lovely community as well.

Welcome to FT!

Appears to be fixed with new update

Logged on this laptop today and saw message. Tried AVG "update now". Error message disappeared and everything is working fine.

AVG appears to have a fix in today's update.

Yes, it's fixed!

Unfortunately I did NOT read lin821's recommendations. I re-installed AVG and this did NOT fix the problem. The problem was fixed with the automatic update, which I run at night.
