If you don't need/want the free night calls, there's no daily fee. Just 10 cents/5 cents all the time.

That is correct. but since that would equal in 7 minutes calling and 3 Messages I opted for that option ;)

With all due respect, I wouldn't wish a Tracfone on my worst enemy.

Well, maybe my very worst enemy... :D

I say this after having seen what my parents have gone through with theirs, getting cheated on the minutes they've added and having a terrible time with customer service. I have called TF customer service on their behalf to set up phones for them after they gave up in frustration, and it's the most inefficient and annoying procedure I've ever seen: Codes upon codes that are read to you by the usually impossible-to-understand foreign call center rep, which takes forever to do. Plus, they calculate the credits and time used as "units" rather than minutes, so it's hard to tell exactly how much credit you have.

Just my two cents' worth.

Nothing wrong with that for you. For me, and possibly others, they may not need the free nights and the daily $1 charge. It's not like the math is hard to figure out which option is best.

I just wanted to point out that there are two options. Options are good.

I use T-Mobile To-Go Prepaid service. You can also pick up a handset in Best Buy, Target etc for $30 but will need to add some airtime. $25 gives you 120 mins and $50 gives you $400 mins. This works better for me as the T-Mobile service lets you text back to the UK whereas the Net10 one doesn't. Texts are currently 10c but I think these are due to double shortly to 20c :(

Don't use either to make international calls. T-Mob, example, is $1.50/min!! I use a CVS (Pharmacy) Sprint calling card. I have used a few in my time but the Sprint card is the only one that charges the same 6c/min for calls to UK Mobiles as well as landlines. Others charge extra for Mobile calls.

It's getting much more common for calling card carriers to differentiate between European landline and mobile rates. Be careful of this.

AT&T does this and I am still not sure when they started. I went from under 10 cents per minute to 28 cents per minute for UK calls under World Connect.

Of course I find it a little silly that I can call a UK mobile number from the US at a cheaper rate (.28usd) than I can call a UK mobile using my UK O2 pre-paid SIM in the UK (.25GBP).

Now they have the following:

1$ per day activation fee

7am-7pm all calls 10 cent/min

7pm-7am all calls free

Texts 10 cent/sent + 5 cent/recieve.

That is a great deal in my eyes. I had a plan with them before and paid a fortune !

AND free TMO-to-TMO calls :D

I concur. Tmobile payg is good for the price. As long as you have the coverage. My family in UK each have tmobile USA sims that they use when they visit here. Once you hit gold rewards (you top up with $100) you automatically get 1 year expiration. Also, any additional topup, even the $10 one, extends it for another year. This has made it easy for my folks in the UK to keep it active. The V195 quadband phone for $29 is an excellent deal. It also comes with a $25 refill card. So, about $4 for a quadband phone is not bad if you ask me. I have 2 of them as backups.

This is a good deal, the $1 per day occurs when you use the phone, keep the SIM off the air and you won't incur the charge. Works well for visiting guest. Target now has the T-Mobile express pay tags as well (top up with retailer scan of the UPC pay tag) - it will top up the amount you tell the cashier based on the phone number you first used with that tag.

For those from Asia it's a steal as incoming calls are free from 7PM-7AM.

I bought my t-mo 2 go minutes online, at a discount, based on another thread here. I used callingmart.com with a fatwallet discount for a total 8% discount, plus callingmart had some sort of 15 minute (?) service guarantee that they failed to meet for another 5% discount.

TMobile prepaids also work in TMobile UMA (VOIP) phones. This means that you can apply recharges and check your voicemail from Europe as long as you are on wifi.

UMA on prepaid

I don't think the UMA calls are free unless you subscribe to hotspot@home. Even if UMA shows up on your phone, it does mean it's 'free'.

Two options from TMO:

1. phone that includes a prepaid sim account, with about 30 minutes loaded, price varies from as low as $29.99 plus tax to $89.99. I recently purchased two Motorola V195s quadband clam shell for $29.99 plus tax - had several visitors from overseas office for a one week and it worked fine.

2. prepaid sim account (w/out phone) for $6.99 on line price or $9.99 if you walk into TMO store, again comes with about 30 minutes loaded.

TMO has two prepaid plans:

1. Pay per day: $1.00 per day, $0.10 per min per call (so once you make first call, you've paid for up to 10 minutes). Good thing about this is free calls after 7 pm and free TMO-TMO.

2. Pay by minutes: you get 15% discount on refills for this plan.

Both systems the number is good for 90 days and can be extended with additional refills/top-ups.

Go to www.t-mobile.com > plans > prepaid for complete details.

We visit the US a couple of times a year and kept putting off getting mobile phones...until we received our bills after our last visit! Even with purchasing a phone rather than just a sim card, it'll still work out so much cheaper. I always thought that more ID would be required to purchase one - but it's good to hear that it's so straightforward. I presume that T-Mobile has various offers and call-plans all the time so we should be able to keep our costs way lower than before^

I didn't say that you could make free calls over UMA. I said you could check your voice mail and apply recharges to your phone. Both of those are free.

It is often very difficult to keep a foreign SIM alive when it doesn't roam in your home country.

One thing I just realized about t-mobile 2 go, when my friend was looking at it:

It's only 10 cents a minute when you buy airtime in $100 increments, and in that case, the minutes (and all subsequent refills) last for a year. It's much higher if you buy smaller refills.

He found a pre-paid reseller called Airvoice, that uses the AT&T GSM network. He was able to buy the SIM on ebay for $4 + $4 s/h. He said the airtime is 10 cents a minute with a 90 day expiration, but there's a 20 cent a day charge for active days. Just another option if you don't need that much time. He wanted it for his kids, and wanted to be able to add airtime in smaller increments. Apparently it works with unlocked phones or phones that are locked to AT&T.
