Excel 2007 - anyone having reliability issues?
It just took me 6 minutes to open a 20 mb Excel file - on a 3rd try . I am reasonably certain that the performance hit was due to Vista, but could Excel be to blame? Has anyone tried using Excel 07 with large spreadsheets on XP? Did you have any issues?

A Microsoft product not at SP1 or above = problems.
|
I've used Excel 07 on a Toshiba laptop running XP for a year or so now with no issues.

What virus scan product are you using?

AVG

Is it an excel 2007 or previous version file? Is excel configured to recalculate formulas automatically or not? Both of these things can contribute to the speed issue with opening the file. Trying once without AV enabled should pretty easily tell you if that's the problem. Ditto for disabling the automatic formula calculation (formula tab | calculation | automatic).
Also, is Excel already open or not? If not, does opening it up first speed the process notably? There may be issues with add-ins or other things slowing down the overall load process, though probably not 6 minutes worth. Were the first two attempts actual failures or did you just get impatient? Do you have orphaned instances of excel.exe running? |
Do you have Adobe Acrobat installed?
I had to disable the Acrobat plugin in my Office applications after experiencing similar hanging. |
The file was created using Excel 2003. Excel was set to recalculate formulas automatically, but disabling it didn't seem to make much of a difference. Disabling the antivirus also didn't affect the loading times significantly.
Regarding the first two attempts, first one was a failure and I got impatient with the second one - closed all orphaned instances before trying to open Excel again. As far as Acrobat, I don't have it running. Using Sumatra PDF instead.

I had two Excel add-ins active and some others inactive. I disabled the active ones, and it seemed to get a little faster, although still very slow.
Saving the document as an Excel 07 file also didn't change anything . Excel is fast when I am not loading a document (or when I load a very small one) , but takes a LONG time to load larger file or to actually do anything with them . Just took over a minute to delete 3000 rows, each of which had 2-3 columns of data. Opening Excel first, before loading the file doesn't make a difference. |
If it is slow loading and manipulating the large doc it sounds like memory more than anything else based on everything else being eliminated.

Lord I hope not. I've had computer issues since last week and our IS dept just installed XP Pro Office 2007 on my system this afternoon. Haven't gotten to play with it yet. With Micro$oft, failure is not an option............... it's fatihfully included in every package  Safe travels, err.... computer travels, err... that don't sound right either but you know what I mean :D Tim |
I've had no problems with Office 2007 since they upgraded me at work. The corporate technology crew set everything to save in the old formats, though.
Well, to tell the truth I have had a few problems with Outlook 2007, but I like it so much more than the old version that I spin it as problem-free because I think it has fewer problems than the 2003 version, on the whole. |
