Windows XP Does not shut down on first try, but does on second try

On one of my computers at my office, Windows XP SP 3 never shuts down on the first try, but it does so perfectly normally on the second try. Any ideas what might be causing this? None of the articles I've managed to Google address this particular glitch, and I'm stumped.

What does it do if not shut down? Any kind of error messages or dialogue boxes appear?

I was having a similiar problem and it had to do with an HP driver that wouldnt shut down allowing windows to close

Are there any pertinent entries in the system log? (Under "manage").

I'll check the system log.

On the first try to shutdown, it just does nothing, no errors or anything. On the second try it shuts down normally.

It sounds like one of the services is getting hung when you try to close it down, and the second time it gets around it.

Gonna be hard to pin down without the "Windows is trying to close such and such a service messages", but you can try to go into the task manager, sort by CPU usage, and see if anything is clogging it down, stop that service and see if that works. That will tell you the service you mave an issue with if it's a service hanging it.

I am still on Win XP Pro SP2 and occasionally my Thinkpad will hang going into standby (it was doing it last week). I reinstalled computers power management software and it now works as advertised.

Thanks I will give it a try over the weekend

It could be because of unresponsive services that do not switch off in time - have a look at this.
