Skype Mobile Client Out
Skype has just released a beta of mobile client that should run on many mobile phones which handle java. Here is a link to an article on it:

VOIP only as far as the mobile network.
Shame it can't do what Fring does. |

Shame it can't do what Fring does. However having Skype on my Iphone is the the coolest thing this week. ;) |

Well Fring is better in that it is a multi-platform chat client (Skype, GoogleTalk, MSN, yahoo, etc.). But it doesn't have all the Skype features yet. Just basic chat. And the Skype voice codec doesn't work very well, at least on the IPhone.

I thought that Fring on the iPhone was pretty lousy qualitywise when I tried it out last week.

Fring is one of the few VOIP programs that can manage over EDGE. I'm not saying it is a great connection, but on most the delay is so bad that you almost need a squak (sp?) key.
|
And Fring isn't just iPhone, either. It works adequately on my Nokia E61i and better on mrs typical's E51.
|
Fring works very nicely on my E61 over wi-fi (unfair advantage I know :)) - and quite nicely over WCDMA. When I'm in a 2G (ie EDGE/GPRS as noted earlier) network area not quite so good - but adequate.

I use fring on my ppc devices, since the skyke clients I have used for about 2 years on the ppc are just junk. The latest is no better, a resource hog and it craps out things like the bluetooth stack making reboots a requirements. I went back to an earlier version for a recent trip, and it was just as bad as I had rememebered. The fring client uses your skype out credit and is much more stable and sounds better to third parties. I really don't know why skype doesn't get this right for ppc devices

Do any of you use the skype product regularly on Verizon's network here in the US?
