But if you are going to want a GPS unit for Europe, I doubt if you can do better than the TomToms. It's a competitive market, if you don't have new features every 6 months, you are doomed. Which is why IMHO Garmin just isn't that impressive any more. All their devices look and feel the same, they haven't announced anything really impressive in ages. |

Does anyone know if LA works with some of the more complex (i.e. multi-lane) traffic circles in the UK?.....I've driven a lot in the UK but those things still scare me at times....sometimes I go around 2-3 times just plotting my next move.
That is more than directional because I have the locater telling me what it thinks about direction but for me, things go so much smoother when I have my line through the circle and out the exit planned right down to a few inches either way. |
Recommend a GPS
I bought the Nuvi 760 a few months ago because as others have posted, the cosst of the additional Europe maps I wanted made the price of the 760 a much better deal, plus you can have vias and abt 100 favorites. And with my usual luck, Costo has a sale on the 760 until unitll June 8, or maybe later, while "supplies last" at $349 including shipping! Still, I'm very happy with the 760 and use it in the car with a bean bag mount. Prefer it over the suction cup. Great unit and no problems after five months of use.

All their devices look and feel the same, they haven't announced anything really impressive in ages. Just an example, a Nokia N73 purchase two years ago had a very nice 2MP camera. Then I wound up carrying a real camera since the Nokia was simply too slow. The TomTom and Garmin Nuvi have too short of a battery life (4-5 hours) to record a trans-pacific or trans-atlantic flights, so I use a Garmin eTrex Cx with 32 hours battery life for that. In fact the very high signal sensitivity you noted prevent those devices to work for a long time. You did some very nice screen shots in the report, but you didn't report what happens when the TomTom is navigating and a call comes in. What does the TomTom do under such situation? For Garmin there is a setting for call priority or navigation priority. In the end our world demand much more flexibility in manging priority than to access some menu setting and change the GPS device priority in such matters. Most car factory navigation and BT handsfree allows both operating at the same time. As the GPS manufacturers compete to pile on more features, I am not sure these feature become more user friendly or the devices become more useful. So in my bag; I still have a camera, cellphone, a BT handsfree device and a GPS. While not traveling, I carry two less because the cars have GPS and BT handsfree already. |
