Seatcounter Security Code
Starting yesterday, whenever I go to Seatcounter for the first time, it asks me to enter a security code, like the ones used when signing up for a new email account at Yahoo. (Basically, squiggly characters in a background that you have to re-enter.)
(Mods: Apologies in advance if already posted, but I could not find in a search. Please move move or combine as appropriate.) |
I notice, once you type in the code correctly, it puts cookies on your machine so that subsequent queries no longer require code verification.

This is weird...
Any clue to why they make one enter the code initially? Glad you don't have to do it for each search- |
well it's clearly to cut down on automated third parties using the tool and swamping the site.

There have been a few denial of service attacks recently one of our vendors got hammered with one today and totally destroyed my Saturday. The codes help keep the bots from getting past the front page into the system tying up all the pages in a system.
And I'm guessing it prevents other sites from getting the results and bringing them out as theirs. |
