Blackberry rental
I am going to London and Madrid this fall and was wondering if anyone knows of a blackberry rental opportunity so that I can communicate via email back home (VA) without having to use skype or landline. My blackberry only works in USA.
thanks |
Cellhire rents them:
http://www.cellhire.com/services/bla...ckberry_cc.htm But at $100 a week ($200/month) you'd be better off looking for a cheaper solution IMHO. You could consider a Nokia Internet tablet and find WiFi hotspots. The Nokia N800 will also run Skype without any problems. If you signup for Boingo ($40/month for unlimited intl. roaming) then you won't have any other costs. When you get back to the States, simply put the N800 up on EBay and you should make back most of what you spent. |
FWIW; Buy.com has the N800 tablet for $232:

Change carriers.
TMO provides excellent coverage in US for competitive price. When I travel overseas, I enable unlimited international BlackBerry data plan the day before I leave and turn it off the day after I return. Cost is 19.99 per month and is prorated to the number of days it is turned on. One week cost is about $5.00. |

Any new recommendations for a Blackberry rental for a 3wk trip to Africa? There will be intermittent cell service everywhere I go but I only have an ipod touch with wifi so would like to be able to check email daily too. Thx

Do not rent a phone in this day and age. Get an unlocked GSM phone and purchase a local sim card.

I will be doing that but my phone does not have email capability. I do have an ipod touch with wifi so if there is cell service, will I be able to use the ipod wifi for email?

There are the UK MiFi rental companies like fonmigo. If you are going to the UK more than once, buy the MiFi and just get a 3 SIM, but for one trip fonmigo is the better deal.

many phones will let you get on the net thru a data plan,
why do you want to use a blackberry ? RB |
The trip has had to be cancelled so am not in need of any type of rental or new phone. Thanks for the replies.

I apologize for bumping this thread...it seemed the most appropriate place.
I live in Israel, but come to the USA a fair amount of times. For America, I have a cell phone already from Verizon, with unlimited talk/text. In Israel, I have a BlackBerry. I want a SIM for America that I can use with my BB for specifically data. 1-2 GB is fine (in a month). I don't know where to look though. Boost and Metro PCS are CDMA, and most of the GSM carriers either don't really have prepaid data plans, or, like AT&T or T-Mobile make it quite expensive. Pricing like Boost or Metro PCS is good, but I'm looking for a GSM equivalent. (My Israeli carrier offers an internet package for USA, but it's NIS 699 for 100 MB, or NIS 419 for 50 MB, which is both not enough data AND very expensive.) If someone can correct me, perhaps I'm looking for too much data. I use e-mail and BBM frequently, (not too much data,) and also the web a lot. Mostly mobile sites and text only, but also occasional videos. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks! |
try BlackBerry unlocking ...
Hi!
Well, if your blackberry has a SIM card support (if you can insert a sim card to your blackberry device) I think the best and the most cheap thing to do is to unlock your Blackberry cell phone and then you will be able to use it out of the US with a local sim card... Also once you unlocked your blackberry i will be able to use it always while you travel... i used this service 3 weeks ago with my new blackberry... but before i had this blackberry i used an unlocked nokia also for the same reason of traveling and using local sim cards... i am on a vacation now using my cell phone with a local carrier without any problem.. but i have a t-mobile GSM so i can insert sim cards... any way... this is my advice before going and renting phones... Have a nice trip and Good luck!:p |
