iPhone Question

If I buy an iPhone in the United States and take it to South Africa can I use it? The iPhone will be unlocked. I have a South African SIM card I plan to use for the iPhone.

Sorry I could not find the answer, and AT&T was unsure about it.

Yes. The iPhone is a quadband phone, and South Africa is on GSM900/1800 so it'll work just fine. You may have to manually enter the EDGE/GPRS settings for it.

How do you plan on unlocking the iPhone? To the best of my knowledge, AT&T will not unlock it for you, you have to search out ways to do it yourself which could turn your iPhone into a brick.

You will be able to use the iPhone with your AT&T sim card in South Africa, you'll just pay really expensive international roaming rates.

I know some people who said they bought some cords that could unlock the iphone. I am really not sure if it will work at all, I am just trying to get some ideas.

I would prefer not to use my AT&T SIM card in South Africa. I would like to use my South African SIM card that I already have.

60 seconds with Ziphone. It's almost impossible to brick an iPhone.

Don't pay anyone to unlock it, it's extremely easy to do yourself nowadays.

Thanks for the helpful information.

New iPhones will come with 1.1.4 firmware and bootloader 4.6. The problem with unlocking with Ziphone is that it will downgrade bootloader to 3.9 and this will void the warranty.

I have used ZiPhone to unlock my iPhone now for 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 versions of my iPhone software. It has worked great both times. It also allows you to jailbreak it and add 3rd party apps via Installer. Overall I am very satisfied. You can also always reset the iPhone to its factory state in iTunes.

No, you cannot. And that's the problem which voids the warranty. You'll be able to restore to factory setting, BUT that will not include bootloader. So you'll have 1.1.4 firmware with bootloader 3.9 which Apple never shipped.
I'm not saying Ziphone is bad (actually I used Ziphone to unlock and jailbreak my iPhone and it is a great software), but when one unlocks using Ziphone, (s)he must know the risk.

But you can downgrade 1.1.4 to a version that does match the firmware.

So unless the iPhone is completely beyond repair, there shouldn't be any reason to not downgrade before shipping it back.

Plus, if it really is beyond repair, chances are that Apple won't bother trying to put the pieces together and read the firmware/bootloader.

After some research last night.....

Does this mean that I could stick my old ATTWS blue sim in it and it would work? (I'm still on an ATTWS family plan on my Treo with unlimited data despite ATT's entreaties to upgrade).

Dubai Stu Mar 12, 2008 4:45 pm

Yes. It will work. Remember that with a cracked iPhone, it is a cat and mouse game whether the next upgrade will work. I'm watching the Apple presentation on iPhone 0S 2.0 on the other screen and think it will be a massive upgrade. I hope they can unlock it.

Thank you.

Including the unlimited data?

They already did

Yes, it is a cat and mouse game, but even with the brightest developers in the world working for Apple, they are up against "the Internet". It's amazing what a group of thousands of hackers can accomplish.

Are there major disadvantages to the 4GB model, other than its having fewer gigas of storage?
