How do I increase volume of videos?
I have a lot of videos on my computer but have found the volume on many to be too low. Can anyone suggest programs that will increase the volume on the videos when I play them on my PC? I have no problems redigitizing them, and new videos will be recorded using an audio enhancer. I need to deal with the videos that I already have. Thanks in advance.

------------------------------------------ Most likely you need a hardware solution. If it's a headphones situation, you likely need somthing like http://www.boostaroo.com/ If you do a google FT search for 'boostaroo' you'll see a number of threads praising it. If its speakers then you need better amplified speakers that can be turned up louder, or a basic amplifier that you can stick in the middle, i.e. http://tinyurl.com/38dhyp |
I use Video Redo. When I'm going to watch something on a plane I raise the volume of the video quite a bit. It takes maybe 5-10 minutes per movie.

No, I don't need a hardware solution

I need a software solution. I have hundreds of music videos that my girlfriend and I like to dance to and the volume of some are too low to do so without speakers. I don't want to lug speakers around and would like to increase the volume so that I can use my laptop speakers only. I am looking into Video Redo at this moment. Thanks for the suggestion. |

You should do a few test files first; depending on your 'ear' and the file's original bitrate you may find the decrease in quality caused by the boost in volume unacceptable. This is called 'clipping.' (If the file already has a high bitrate you may not notice.) |

You need to "normalize" the audio of your home-encoded videos. There are several methods for doing that. Take a look at either of the two sites I have linked for guides and software to accomplish normalization:
http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/normalize_avi.html http://www.videohelp.com/guides?sear...or+List+Guides With the right tools, normalization isn't too difficult. JR One thing that caught my attention was that VideoRedo is optimized for mpg conversion and may convert videos in 5-10 minutes. This is not a feature that I was looking for and is only a selling point to me if it does the other things I am looking for. I have been browsing the VideoReDo user forum and user guides and it has several features that look very interesting and may be superior to the uLead and Adobe products that I have. Some people initially complained about clipping, but after using the tool settings as suggested it looks like satisfied users (unless they just delete all unsatisfied user posts). |

I don't think I said it in my initial post but I've been very satisfied with Video ReDo. |
The support seems quite good for VideoRedo

Would you by any chance have a link to where you found settings? I've just kinda guessed how much to up the volume to. Sometimes it's not enough & sometimes it is too much & clips. I probably need to just write down what I normally do and continue to do that.
I don't think I said it in my initial post but I've been very satisfied with Video ReDo. http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/showthread.php?t=5569 I still have not downloaded the trial yet, it only works for 15 days and I am still travelling (as in happytravelling). I like some of the features I have seen, especially the fact that it does not recode the mpg files for audio adjustment, which suits my purposes exactly. *********************** more info - link here: http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/sh...+normalization *********************** from the forum Done, authored short DVD, same issue, PGCEdit says MPEG1 layer2 audio bit depth is 20 bit and when played on DVD, audio is clipped/distorted. When change ifo to label audio as 16bit reauthored DVD plays fine. As well uploaded original mpg and PGCEdit modified VIDEO_TS Email sent to [email protected]. I must say the support provided for this software is impressive. ************************** However, there is a link that says that they were planning on implementing audio normalization in late '06. I have posted a question on whether this is available in the latest product offered: Here is the link (my moniker is the same - happytravelling): http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/sh...4927#post34927 update - audio normalization has not been implemented on VideoReDo, but you can save the settings. From the forum: ****************************** Originally Posted by PhilK I'd simply like initially to be able to adjust the overall volume of the sound track. Up or down and save the changes made. How to increase video volume
I have the same problem sometime About 10% of all video's i record have low volume. Even if you hook computer speakers to your computer the volume is still so low you can not hear all the words.
So i tried DFX Audio Enhancement it works great on the volume, you can down load the trial version for 30days you only get half the volume but you will be able to tell the difference. fxsound.com They have a package that covers just about anything you will ever play on your computer or you can get it just for windows media player,Div x player or what ever. |
I set VLC media player to 200% volume, plus I use the graphic equalizer with preamp set to maximum.

When I watch on a plane, I'm usually at the lowest or 2nd-lowest setting for volume. Everyone else around me usually has it at max. |

Seriously, VLC is often the only way I can hear some videos at all. |
I use GoldWave to normalize audio on MP3s and I think it'll work on other sources.
How about Audacity? It's freeware: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ |
Another trick I discovered in VLC is setting the audio device to 5.1 even though I'm using stereo headphones. If 5.1 is available, it's generally louder and it sounds better. I don't know why.
