I had a similar idea in the 90's when online dating became popular. I had an idea that people would get a temporary extension in a dial in system, allowing other people to reach them via that temporary extension. They could discard that extension at any time.
This goes one step further. It is very cool.

Now that is nifty. Even my mom likes the idea... and I like the fact it passes the caller ID through.
I might set one of these up for essentially free long distance. For example, you're coming to Chicago for work, and your hotel allows free local calls. Set up a 773 number for the week to forward to your home, and use it before 7/9pm when your cellphone kicks over to unlimited use.

That is cool, especially for the potential "free long distance" applications discussed above. Apparently, it is relatively secure as you need to provide not only the public assigned number and extension but also the forward to number to make modifications and extend expiration time.
This could also be very nice for those signup forms that require a number.
