I believe I read in another forum that, out of the box, the 770 cannot run Skype. The 800 can, but it costs over $200 more.
It may be possible to replace the 770's operating system with one that has been hacked to run Skype (it's open source linux), but I think there were stability or other problems with that OS version. |
I have Skype running nicely on my UK T-Mobile M3100 (Is that the "Wing"?). I run the low processor speed version of Pocket PC Skype as it runs better than the standard install and quality is acceptable. I have even managed to make calls sucessfully using a 3G connection.

Thanks for the reply. I'm new to this VOIP thing and was thinking that either the 770 or the T-Mobile Wing would be nice to have to take to Europe.

Gizmoproject on 770
Downloaded Gizmoproject last night and it appears to work fine on my Nokia 770. They have a specific version for the 770.
It appears to have rates of 1.5 cent to any USA phone from anywhere. You get a 25 cent credit just for signing up. This is enought to test it out before you purchase additional time. http://gizmoproject.com/ |
I installed Tversity on my Windows Home Server and installed Media Streamer (from Nokia) on my 770. Apart from having to click my way to find the folder structure I have built my media library on I can now playback most of my content to the 770.
I also got the Navigation Kit for Nokia 770 of ebay for $150, it comes with the only commerically available nav software for the IT OS called Navicore a car holder and the Nokia LD-3W bt gps (and a 1gb mem card). It works quite nice and will surely be used quite a bit (I have several GPS units since earlier but no one with wlan). I just ordered another 770 from the few remaining at expansys. |
Ive been playing around with mine too. I think it is worth the price just for the RSS reader with offline capability. I can refresh my feeds, take the ones I want offline and then have them to read on a plane or whatever. Only need a couple of minutes of WiFi to do it. Then Im good to go with content for a while. Now to load more feeds. Im quite happy with this purchase. :D ^

just received from TigerDirect
Based on this thread, I ordered one last week from TigerDirect and it arrived yesterday.
Ideally I would like a small Internet browser that I can take on personal vacations and leave the laptop at home, though also play mp3s, mp4s, and download my digital SLR. I'll be looking into the Archos with Wifi, but for ~$130, the Nokia seemed like a good deal, and something to play with in the short term. Within a few minutes of turning it on I had it browsing on the net. The GUI is intuitive, and speed is reasonable. With only ~30 minutes of playing with it, I do find the screen size to be practical to browse, but overall size impractical to hold for long. |
Its been awhile since I've played with the Gizmo stuff... at one point they supported SIP or at least some open standards... so in theory you could use their client to connect to your own Asterisk/Trixbox server and places calls through any other VoIP service...
Again, this is all based on memory and its been a while since I played with it. But I was able to get my 770 to talk to my Asterisk box via Gizmo. |

I got myself an N800 last week (for around same price as the 770:D). When I had one earlier this year it didn't impress me, but the changes they made to the OS are just awesome.
1) I dumped Opera and installed Mozilla, MUCH better 2) Put Rhapsody on it as well as the Canonla media player (Canona doesn't work at the moment though). Loads of other apps on it, there are quite a few good quality repositories out there if you have one of these. I take back all the nasty things I've said about the N800 :D |

Yes, I did, and I know that is the cause of my issue. I tried some of the, uh, workarounds but they didnt work with the official flash.
No biggy as I have a workaround, but it would be nice to get it working with the Dash. Thanks. |

It was a pricing issue in store, none more at that price or I'd have posted it here. Sorry...

So where's the best price right now?
TigerDirect (which shows up in some searches) is out of stock. There are several used ones on eBay for ~$125-ish. |
I got mine at macmall.com. I think that it even came with a rebate form to have the shipping refunded.
