Looks like mine re-started on its own here in North Calif

jason8612 Aug 17, 2011 2:37 pm

yup. mine went back up a few hrs ago.

It seems the outage was about three and a half hours, I must have just caught it first thing in the morning at 05:45 pst, apparently it went down at 05:40 pst. back up by 09:00 pst for most users.

After nearly six years using ooma, this is the first real outage I can remember. Of course, I might have been away when it happend before, or didn't notice it if I wasn't calling anyone. My previous service (sunrocket) would ring the lines when it went back on, so I pretty much knew if the box was rebooting or the service was coming back online. I don't always SEE the flashing red light on the ooma (not that I have really seen it before)

Bumping a really old thread, but an email from Ooma took me by surprise - they are offering me a "special offer" of $99 to upgrade my original Ooma to the "new and improved" Telo for just $99 (the same unit costs just $129 at Costco with lifetime free phone) - BUT only if I start to pay taxes ($6.79/month in my area).

Do they think I am totally stupid or something? Hopefully nothing will ever happen to my poor Ooma, or my "lifetime free" phone service will suddenly start costing more than I bargained for.

Yes, they do think you are a stupid consumer. It's just amazing what some companies will do.

yeah, I just got the same email today too. Doesn't really make ANY sense, pay 99$, but start paying about 7$ a month in taxes and fees. Now, granted that is very low but still I don't pay anything on the two ooma hubs that I have now. I DO pay for premier (locked in at 99$ a year) but only so I can continue to use a scout and second number, and do like some of the features I get.

There USED to be a path for HUB owners to ove to a TELO hub, but remain in the same T&C's ala no taxes or local service charges.

Honestly, lately I've been using the line about 7-10 hours a day, including BOTH lines so I'm truly getting my monies worth.

I DO have a third ooma, already activated and ready to use as a backup if any of these current two fail, but not sure if number porting would work, but at this point in the worlds history with google voice numbers etc., it really doesn't matter.

Want to know if anyone recently acquired Ooma's service? And if, how do you like it. I am looking for a replacement for an AT&T land line and an AT&T U-Verse line.

Global_Hi_Flyer Mar 3, 2013 8:43 am

Not exactly recently, I've had mine for 2 years.

I'm pretty happy, it does what it's supposed to: take calls, forward, and answer (with email of voicemail). I don't care for the Ooma wireless extension - I use a cordless phone on the system and also have the system forward to my wireline and cell phones.

The most recent update to the Ooma Android app works pretty well. It does not allow incoming calls on your Ooma line (not a big deal for me).

Two quibbles that may or may not be a big deal to you: 1) the mobile app does not work over VPN. 2) The system cannot receive/relay SMS texts (making it problematic for porting a mobile phone number to it).

nmenaker Mar 3, 2013 9:03 am

Yeah, I'm still very happy. One of the better (if not ONE of the best) technology purchases I have had. I WAS an alpha tester, and received free boxes (but ended up buying a production model too)

Now with over 7 years of service, I still don't have any complaints (I'm lucky I don't pay any taxes on this ORIGINAL hubs) but I've put the Telo into several homes as well and they work fine too. Taxes and fees now can be between 2.50-5ish depending on where one lives but that's just nothing in cost.

I think I could count the number of true outages I have had with ooma in the past five years on one hand (missing 1-2 fingers at that!)

We use it at home some days, both lines running for about 16 hours a day.

ElmhurstNick Mar 4, 2013 8:25 pm

I bought one for my parents for Christmas 2011. They are technologically inept, and they love it. Up-time with acceptable quality is probably 99.8%. In fact, my dad was enthusiastically recommending it to my uncle, except my dad doesn't understand that without Internet service OOMA isn't going to be doing much... :)

Really like my Ooma, but dislike the prerecorded message I have to listen to everytime I use a service like freeconferencecall. However, I understand why they have to do this, and it's certainly a better option than what Google did, which was to block all calls to those kinds of numbers.

Anyone used Ooma for Business yet?
http://www.ooma.com/products/business

bukzin Nov 8, 2013 8:13 am

I have used the Ooma service for 3 years and now have major problems.

I contacted tech support about switching service and porting my number to another
VoIP company; Obihai. The response was not helpful. I now can not receive calls
and everything goes to voicemail which I cannot retreive.

In other words, Ooma has my number and will not release it.

Anyone dealt with this sort of issue?
