Making Standby/Hybernate work - after installing XP
 

I purchased a new Dell D620 a couple months ago with Vista pre-installed.

I decided to install my copy of XP on my new machine. After installing, I downloaded all the drivers from the Dell website and my D620 works great....except one thing: Neither standby nor hybernate are options.

Start->Turn Off Computer gives me:
"Sandby" GREYED OUT and "Turn OFF" and "REStART"

Start->Control Panel->Power Options->Power Buttons
"When I close the lid of my portable computer"
ONLY ONE OPTION: "Do Nothing" :(
"When I press the power button on my computer"
Three options:
Shut down, Ask me what to do, and Do nothing.

How do I get Hybernate as an option?

Control Panel -> Power Options -> Last tab (Hibernate)

Set the checkbox to enable Hibernation. It'll eat about 1Gb disk space.

On my XP laptop, I click on the "turn off" (or "shut down" or whatever it says) next to the "start" button, then it fades the desktop some and pops up a small window with choices of "stand-by", "log off", "shut down" or such. Press the <SHIFT> key (IIRC), and "Stand By" changes to "Hibernate", then click on that with the mouse, and it proceeds to do just that.

Not a tab. My 4 tabs are: Power Schemes, Alarms, Power Meter, and Advanced.

Hybernate is not anywhere to be seen.

Advanced has "Always show icon on the taskbar" and "Power Buttons" as the two options.

I already detailed my "Power buttons" options.

I think I need to install something to add hybernate to my system configuration. How do I go about this?

Shift does not alter my "turn off computer" screen where there is no hibernate and standby is greyed out - not functional.

Sounds like you are missing some drivers.

Did you install the Chipset drivers from Dells site? Part of those will probably be the ACPI stuff you need for powersaving.

Check under your device manager and the "system devices" section, you should have a couple of ACPI entries (fixed feature button, sleep button etc...).

If these are missing then that'll be your problem.

Also; check under the "computer" heading in device manager, the computer should be listed as an ACPI multiprocessor PC (or just ACPI PC).

But I'd start with the chipset drivers.

My PC is listed as an "ACPI Multiprocessor PC." Under "System Devices" I have the following listed as ACPI: "ACPI Lid," "ACPI Power Button," "ACPI Sleep Button," and "ACPI Thermal Zone." Under "Batteries" I also have "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery."

Sounds like you have them all then. Did you install the chipset stuff?

I installed (just now) using your link just to make sure.

Still no options (after a restart).
