Laptop Modem Problem: REMOVED ??
 

Was using one of my XP laptop's last night and the thing hung up big time. By the time I rebooted it, it's not showing a modem. It says the modem was removed. The laptop is an HP XP and I had gone through this before about a year ago and it magically appeared back right before I was left with the choice of reinstalling everything on the computer per INDIA's advice.

So before I bother with calling India, I thought I might try FT for help.

Assuming the modem is installed in either PCI or USB, try running a "sniffer" or other hardware monitor to see if the modem is physically still responding. If it is still there in the list then it'll be a software issue to get it running again. If it isn't showing up, then there is a hardware issue that needs repairing...

I think something like Sisoft sandra may be able to show if its still there.

OK I have downloaded that software Sandra, thank you. Pretty cool software even on the free lite version. BTW, I had earlier tried to roll back the computer a day to see if that was an issue as I was uploading a lot of new software on it last night before it froze up on me.

Sandra shows the modem is there, but... I have no ports at all.

I am only showing COM4 Bluetooth and the rest of the ports seem to be non existent, per device manager and sandra and such. The modem is showing as using COM3 (per Sandra) but I don't / can't find COM3 anywhere else. In Sandra under the Device info for the Modem it says warning port in use [20].

So.. anyone wanna walk me through what I gotta do next.

Is the modem missing from device manager? If so, you might be able to download the driver from the HP web page and reinstall it that way. Forget calling India. If you don't use the modem, then don't bother.

Nope, the modem is not on the device manager. It is listed when you look for it via Sandra so it is there.

Before when this happened it took a day or two then it magically showed back up for whatever reason. Unfotunately, living in the Pacific Islands, I need a modem as there's only dial up.

In device manager, right-click on Modems and click Scan for Hardware Changes. If there's no Modems branch in the tree, do it from the root.

Go to the "System Restore" feature of XP and take the computer back to where was operating ok........usually a few days.

Thanks but nope I already did that and mentioned it above. That was one of the first things I did try. For some reason the physical modem is found via the sondra program but nothing else. So I have to say I have some software glitch someplace that really messed up. As I said, before this happened and it took a day or two then everything magically went back to normal. So I haven't opened it up today yet and am crossing my fingers. Atleast this has me working on my Vista machine :mad: :mad:
