OS X users, 10.4.9 update
 

I just thought I would re-iterate to everyone using OS X that you take care when updating to 10.4.9.

It is a finicky update and if not run correctly, will keep your machine from booting. Do a backup (Carbon Copy Cloner to a Firewire drive is what I suggest), close all applications, and install.

I found that downloading the combo-installer if on an Intel machine is your best bet (instead of the Software Update).

Just a heads up.

Same here, one machine wouldn't boot, took a little work to get it going again, booting in safe mode and then repairing persmissions did it, but I have HEARD that I was lucky and a more involved repair job can be required. This was a much BIGGER update than apple led on, and it touched a number of items, so I would suggest,

repair permissions, BEFORE running the update, find your install DVD before doing the update, and don't do it when you might need the machine quickly thereafter.

Bah! Sounds like a PC user. My computer upgraded while I was working, when it was done I restarted an went on wit my bidness.
You don't "run" this upgrade, it just happens. I LOVE MY MAC.

No problems with my iMac, MacBook and Mac mini, all Intel CD-based.

Oddly, I didn't have any problem with the Intel Mac I ran it on, but an older G4 one had a problem booting afterwards. Usually it will boot ultimately, but might be slow. The trick is to repair permissions and have a utility on hand that can redo the "optimizing" that Software Update does at the end of its process. One or both of those pretty well cures what goes wrong with any update. (Wasn't just 10.4.9 either. A couple weeks ago I had a 10.3 machine hiccup similarly on some standard security updates and the DST update.)

So far it was totally painless on one G5...

I am a heavy Mac user and when this upgrade "just happened" it failed halfway through and killed my MBP. I was able to get to boot but the install had messed up some permissions beyond repair. This forced me to backup everything using Carbon Copy Cloner and do a new install.

Read the Apple Discussions on this upgrade, it sounds like it is a scourge, especially for those folks on the Intel architecture.

these guys are correct. you should always backup and repair disk permissions before and after an upgrade. I usually dont upgrade unless it fixes a specific problem i am having. And definitely not until a few weeks after its release.

Just did an intel mac with no problems... used Remote Desktop to push out the update...

I was going to put off updating to 10.4.9 simply because there is nothing critical in it but decided to go ahead with it.

Just a side note, I did repair permissions immediately before the upgrade and after and still had problems. Talking to people at the Apple Store, the problems with 10.4.9 are random and they think it has something to do with applications that are installed.

I did not post this to be taught how to upgrade, just wanted to give people a heads up about known issues with this update. Like I said, just peruse the Apple Discussions about this update and you will see what I mean.

Just another quick update...
I updated 4 PPC macs and 2 Intels (Mini and MB) without problem...all with remote desktop with the exception of the one I'm sitting in front up.

I'm about to push the combo out to my parents' 2 PPCs boxes right now too...

Updated my MacBook Pro, no problems here either. :)

No problems updating a late-model G4 PowerBook; it just worked. I did a full disk-image backup on an external drive before the upgrade, but that's my normal backup routine anyhow. Didn't do anything special.

No problems here with the installation.

C2D 15" MBP.

No problems upgrading to 10.4.9 on my G4 Powerbook.
