without a data connection, think you might be outta luck. since GSM only covers voice portions i believe, need EDGE/CDMA to cover the data portion of it.

You can do it, but you have to download the BB desktop manager software.

I seem to remember someone had a off the shelf $30 product for this that would trick your BB into being a slave for the laptop with network not knowing laptop is actually sending the data.

The OP says he has a data connection, and the title above his posts says he's posting from his Blackberry. FWIW; There is no CDMA in Africa and you don't need EDGE, regular GPRS is enough. Most old(er) Blackberries don't even support EDGE so they just run on GPRS.

So do you just sign up with a 'data unlimited' plan and this works anyplace in the world? Ie I would be getting 'free' internet here?

You need to be careful with that. The "unlimited" plan T-mobile sells for their Blackberry for international use doesn't include browsing. It does WAP for free and email. Anything other than that (tethering to a PC for example) is very expensive.

Are you sure? Last year I was in NZ and had subscribed to the unlimited plan.

Over several months I browsed a lot.

I did not get charged anything extra.

Alternatively is the cost 1-2 cents per kb?

Browsing on the device is no problem, but tethering to a PC will be. Double check with them.

It is pretty easy to do. You will need to make a new connection and use the connection information that your provider requires. I do not need a user name or password but it could be different for other service providers. Once you get the connection configured you will neede to make sure that you open the desktop connection and keep it open while you are online.

I am testing the Mobishark modem sw from El Salvador via t mobile and their partner movistar.

1 Some websites load (ie yahoo.com) some do not (ie mailstreet.com). Why?

2 Internet explorer works for a while and then it seems that all of a sudden bytes recv sent hangs and I have to reboot everything for it to start working again. Why?

3 I have hosted outlook. What do I have to do to get this to work?

4 any guess what the worst case scenario for cost per byte will be?

Thanks

It is a sw modem recommended in one of the links above. It look easier to configure than the some of the posts mentioned

Was easy to setup, but I cannot get hosted exchange or mailstreet.com to work.

I was hoping someone else here used it.
