T-Mobile Dash - Experiences?
Those who have it, how do you like it so far? It's been ok for me... my only problem is that it doesn't want to install any programs... says the .cab file was not meant for it. I've tried the AA timetables and Minimo now. I also tried instaling via ActiveSync and direct download.
Running Windows Mobile 5.0 of you're curious. |
I have the Dash and am now trying the HTC TyTN. There is going to be an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 pretty soon for the Dash. I like the phone but the buttons are too small for me. I haven't tried to download anything as of yet. Good little phone that is easy to carry and works great internationally.
When I get home from LHR, I will try to download the UA flight schedule. |

GadgetFreak is correct; you'll need to find programs specifically made for the smartphone platform. Most smartphone apps run on a PocketPC, but not the other way around.
Check smartphone.net for apps made for your platform. Oh, and you'll also run into issues with the screen resolution as not all apps are made for landscape. |
yes,
yes is is WIN5 smartphone, so no working versions of excel or word, but viewers. The dash works well, slingplayer works well, syncing, push email, etc.
#1 1K GF really likes the feel of it, and the back side material. I just read last week that t-mo, will give a free upgrade to Winmo 6, when that comes out, which will be nice. The only thing NEITHER of us like is the touch sensitive jogbar, which has to be adjusted to work well, and not when you don't want it to. But, that wasn't too difficult to do. |

Three reasons I am considering it again: 1) I get a discount upgrade from TMobile in a month, hate to waste that; 2) I like the form factor for texting/email more than the T9 SDA typing and 3) definitely not least, WM6 is supposed to have native Word editing in the Smartphone version.

although, we ended up getting ours for 50$, now I think it is FAR. I think a new version is coming, which will support some soft of HSPDA or other.

Just google DASH hacks and tweaks and you'll find all sorts of goodies. |
How fun... just found out how to connect my laptop to the Dash and onto the Internet. Woot.

WinMO 6 or 69, it's still WinMO = bloated and slow.
Hate it. |
not sure what you mean here

Hate it. not sure what you mean here, but my winmo 5 devices run considerably better than my pos devices on the same hardware. The current ones I use, the dash and the treo 700wx, are better than my pos 700p, other than the screen resolution. Use a bit less memory and are more responsive. As well, I haven't had a single crash on the winmo5 and SP versions, whereas on the 700p i have had. |

From your SDA/MDA/Dash
http://surrealnetworks.com/mpx/ (or your desktop, download the cabs and install) |

Hate it. Seriously, I was a Treo user for ages, and lived with the various foibles of PalmOS for years. But now that I've gone to WM5 I'd never go back. Steve |
Problem with alarm
Ok, for some reason my phone has decided to set off it's alarm every morning at 3am PT!
I've set the alarm for other times, I've turned it off... but it still does it by itself. Any ideas? |

Upgraded my tmo dash to WM6 Beta (via link found at www.xda-developers.com - still beta, but vast improvement in speed of applications. New browser is nicer, voice command is included (but needs some hacking to get it working with Bluetooth).
|
Interesting developments... looking forwards to voiding my phone's warranty ;)

I'm really happy with the upgrade (even beta w/ bugs)... html email is supported, battery life about 50% longer, better browser, voice command (free), etc. |

My $.02 - WM6 looks like a big collection of bug fixes with a small number of new features. As TMO plans on this being a free upgrade, I'm OK with that. |
The Dash blows
I got the Dash about a week after it came out. Here are my thoughts.
1.) Cute phone...very stylish 2.) Too small to fit in your hand and slipps out easily 3.) The opperating system is too damn slow 4.) Volume strip is way too touchy...even after you play w/ the settings 5.) Too frail. I lightly dropped mine on concrete a month ago and it totally messed up the screen. I dumped it and went back to the Blackberry. I miss the camera, but oh well. Cool phone, but just not practical for a power-user. |
WM6 on the dash speeds it up quite a bit, I think it was made for WM6.
|
Update: I've updated to WM6, and it works much better. Slightly faster interface, and it seems more stable. The biggest additions for me are solitaire :p and Voice Command.
The one drawback... my Samsumg WEP200 BT headset doesn't work with this Voice Command anymore (it did with the crappy WM5 version). I'm going to have to find out if there's a fix... but what good is voice recognition if I can't use it with my handsfree device? |
duh.. i forgot to try out the most important feature :p
with WM6 and the update IE, the big blue header on FT is now gone, making it lightyears easier to navigate in my dash. will have to see if i can load the timetables now. reporting in from my chiros table on my dash :) |
FYI - T-Mobile has officially released the WM6 upgrade for the Dash:

http://www.t-mobile.com/wmupgrade/ Anyhoo... found how to change the registry to get my headset to work. Apparently, there are other forums out that, that are not only not about FF, but about other stuff! Now, to see how else I can void my warranty. |

It does seem faster too. All in all, I still love this phone. I see it available all over Russia now too. |
I upgraded my Dash to WM6 a few weeks ago. Everything seems improved with one major exception...I use a Mac and the only way to sync a modern Windows Mobile device is with the MissingSync application...which does not support WM6. Moral of the story: don't update your Dash if you use a Mac.
