Surge protector/UPS for Tivo: how to hook up?
Slightly arcane question. I have a couple of Tivo problems attributable to brief interruptions in power. So I bought a UPS to guard against this (APC 325 VA at Office Depot for $18; great deal for very low-load use).
Right now I have the Tivo plugged into a line filter/surge protector (designed to smooth/clean up the incoming AC; improves sound/picture quality) along with the rest of my system. The UPS isn't big enough to handle the whole system, nor is there a reason to have an APC on, e.g., a TV. Question is simple: which of the below do I do? a) plug UPS into wall and Tivo into UPS; b) plug UPS into line filter and Tivo into UPS Thanks. |

If you are using the line filter, it should be between the Tivo and the UPS. You don't need to clean up the stuff going into the UPS.
You should get rid of it though and get a UPS that does it all for you. |
The APC has a line filter built-in; I'd dispense with the extra one. You might still run the TV through the filter.
If you have a cable box, put that on the UPS too. |
