Yep, I need to do further research before trusting any of these things. A co-worker just sent me a laptop that powered off a minute or so after powering on (not my job, but no one else does it). I removed the cover from the fan compartment and determined that the fan was failing. With the fan cover off the machine ran indefinitely. I tried several temperature monitors, but none of them worked with that laptop.

By observation, the CPU was overheating from ambient in less than two minutes!

On my homebuilt desktop with a 2GHz P4, the CPU temp usually hovers around 65C/149F, at least according to ASUS PC Probe. The motherboard temperature is around 34C/93F. I've got lots of fans installed.

The CPU temp used to be around 55-60C until I installed the Folding@Home software, which every FTer should do ;)

Water cooled P4 775 3GHZ overclocked to 3.5GHZ 35c, Video card is also water cooled running at 43c dual monitor and Digital TV card in use most of the time.

The video card is on the output of the CPU water system, so it's a little high.

Vapor Phase is my next "pimp my machine" venture, when I stop spending money on flights. http://www.pccasegear.com.au/prod3114.htm

65 C ... one of the first P4 laptops

My water-cooled dual-core Athlon averages 95F (yes, F :) ) according to AsusProbe. It might spike up to 110F if I'm running two instances of Prime95 or something...

41-43 for my Dell E1505, and 33-36 for my wife's Pentium D 3.4ghz
