Internet screening software for kids?

I just bought my son a computer and would like him to have internet access. However, he is not at the age where unsupervised internet surfing is a good idea.

Any suggestions on software that works? Of course, free is better than something that needs to be purchased if possible.

Software is not going to help you. There are an infinite number of inappropriate pages your son could find. And like most kids, he will probably be able to turn off the software soon enough. I think the best practice would be to place the computer in a high traffic area of the house like the den, kitchen etc. and therefore allow for easy human supervision. You should also review some basic rules about the computer. Never give out personal information (name, phone number, address etc) to a stranger. And that people who claim to be other kids in chatroom are not always what they seem.
Have a look at www.safekids.com/kidsrules.htm for more ideas.
