Usage of slingbox?
 

I've read alot about this and never actually met anyone who's used it for roadtrips, etc... Any feedback on your usage of Slingbox or overall opinions on it? Going to be spending lots of time travelling soon, so might be an option.

I've got one and use it often when I travel. It's great for keeping up with things like the Daily Show, local news, etc. Picture quality isn't fabulous, but it's certainly good enough. I most recently used it on our trip to South America -- my wife appreciated being able to watch the Colbert Report after we were in for the evening. However, for "must see" shows (for me, The Amazing Race), I transferred the show from my Tivo to my main computer (using VPN and VNC), then ftp'd it to my laptop, converted it to mpeg2 and watched it in its full-resolution, hi-fi stereo glory. ;)

It rocks. I couldn't live without. Especially in places where the English TV options extend to CNN and BBC World; it's a lifesaver. Most modern hotel TVs have video and audio inputs you can use, so I have a wireless presentation mouse I use as a remote. I plug in, and watch away! Nothin beats laying around watching digital cable when you're halfway 'round the world and don't want to miss a show and/or want to catch up on local news.

I adore mine. Nothing better than watching playoff hockey from the other side of the world; or, even better, from a plane over Siberia!!! My Slingbox is my savior.

One of the things I used to miss when traveling was my Tivo, not anymore. Anyone who travels and also watches tv (especially your local sports teams) should have a slingbox.

While the picture doesn't compare to HD :) it is great for all the topics above (watching sports, TV shows, news) and I love mine - especially when traveling or even from different rooms in the house.

The demise of Connexion is a blow to slingboxers, everywhere (well at least those in the sky).

I think its great. I mostly use in on the Treo over Verizon Wireless. I watched the World Series celebration on Friday on the Treo from inside a concert venue in Las Vegas...

I'm in my hotel room in Opatija, Croatia, slinging to my Satellite TV and Tivo back home in SF. Believe me, you don't want to watch what they have to offer here.

Any experience with the Slingbox pro yet? I have a HD cable source i can use in the US so would i then be able to watch US shows on a 40" 1080p with decent quality(720p or 1080i).

I love my Slingbox, as well. Even when I'm not travelling it gets use -- the other day I was at a hockey game, and during intermissions I was watching TV on my PDA :) (The Pittsburgh Civic Arena has a free hotspot, strangely enough...)

hopefully not too stupid a question but does your laptop has a video out? Or do you use some sort of serial/monitor port-to-video cable?

I've used it when traveling throughout Europe. The picture quality is not so great but it beats watching German infomercials.

I haven't gotten around to getting the a/v in/out for the hotel television set yet, but I enjoy watching either basic cable channels that my hotel often doesn't get (such as Comedy Central) or stuff stored on my TiVo to fall asleep.
