Which canon elph to buy?
My wife has lost two Canon Elphs in the last two years. The last time she lost it I swore to myself that I would not buy another one but because of our new baby daughter we are just losing to many great memories. So I have decided to buy her another camera. She really likes the elph line and we have a canon printer that is good for direct printing. I just went to amazon and there are so many versions of the elph. Some have higher pixels and some have image stabilization and the prices vary from 200 to 400. I originally bought her a SD450 but now I'm confused. Which one do you recommend?

I just received the SD900 for an upcoming trip to China and Japan. Haven't tried it out yet but will let you know how it does in the coming week.

I'm very happy with my SD-550, but if I had to buy a new one it would be the SD700 IS or SD800 IS. The image stabilisation thing is a great feature!

I just picked up the SD630 for my daughter. Amazon had it for ~$250.00. I love my Canon S2 IS, awesome camera w/ 10x zoom and image stabilization.

Right now I would get the SD800 IS for the stabilization and the wide angle lens (28mm equivalent at the wide end vs 35mm or so typical for most small zoom cameras). Although, if you're never going to take pics inside, the wide angle is probably less valuable. Inside shots is where it is most useful.
I wouldn't get the SD900. Over and over again the small cameras with the 10Mpixel sensors turn up worse photo quality results vs the ones with lower pixel count. The ones with a bit less zoom and no stabilization like the SD630 are indeed a bit thinner and lighter, but for me the wide angle and stabilization would be worth it. It's not that much bigger, really. The camera is still pretty tiny, and I think it's lighter than the SD500 we got a couple years ago. We haven't decided to replace that yet. |
Ken Rockwell, a somewhat controversial pro photographer, uses the SD700 as his pocket camera. Read about it here.
While your're at it, read about why your camera doesn't matter. |
Another vote for the SD600/630.

I've been a Canon guy all the way so far. EOS Elan, 10D, 5D, D200, and D400. Was looking for a new point-and-shoot recently and considered the SD600, but went with the Sony DSC-T10.
YMMV, but I love the little Sony. This was after agonizing about dumping all my gear for a Holga. :D |
The one thing I don't like about that Sony and most other cameras in the ultra compact range is that they've given up on the optical viewfinder. Yeah, most of the time I don't use it either, but it's still nice to have them for the occasional shot. Canon still puts them even on these small cameras.

Thank you

I spent a long time waiting to buy a second camera (Mrs. CTW uses the S410 on her trips). I researched and researched, but couldn't decide between another Elph, a Pentax (the 'weatherproof' WS for example), or something else. A couple of weeks ago I was visiting some college friends in New Hampshire, and just bit the bullet -- went into Best Buy and got an SD600 for about $299. Too bad I didn't know about the coupon above!! Oh well, I'm still happy, and having a nice subcompact is great.
