That noise you hear is the transmission from a Blackberry.

Not only cheap speakers. I've noticed this with several different brands of professional studio monitor speakers - powered/active ones (in fact IIRC it happens in all the studio facilities i use) . I haven't done any tests to discern whether it leaks in via unbalanced wiring into the mixer, or is picked up directly by the circuitry in the loudspeakers. And the phone doesn't have to be REALLY close either - even 10-15 feet away - I have students sitting in class with phones on vibrate or silent, and until they realise what's going on I to can amaze them with my magical powers by asking who is going to get a message or call in a couple of seconds......!

Of course, they have their cell phones sitting on the desk not 6 inches from the speakers. Showing them what causes it and seeing the understanding flash across their faces is sometimes priceless.

For those of you who still believe that mobile phones cannot interfere with aircraft flight instruments, this is one of a number of interferences that come out on the crew's headphones when people have mobiles switched on in the cabin - or even have them turned to silent. The crew may be well ahead of you but the aircraft aerials are just above your head.
Been there and heard it. |
