Cingular HSDPA

"speedy" :D

Yup, tested the same technology out on T-Mobile in the UK. Proper broaband!

Got your TyTN all fired up there Scott?

Faster than Verizon's EVDO?

Probably not, I'm getting between 650 kbit/s and 850 kbit/s, but at half the price of Canyouhearmenow.

I'm anxiously awaiting the wider rollout of EV-DO Rev A by Sprint. It'll be nice to upgrade from my current Rev 0 card and actually have useful upstream bandwidth...
It is nice seeing 3G GSM services finally being rolled out in a decent fashion though. It'll be even nicer when I can get proper HSDPA/HSUPA service from T-Mobile since I refuse to deal with other US carriers for voice, having been through almost all of them at one point or another.

Cingular GlobalConnect plan?

I'd like to try out Cingular's HSDPA service, but I'm waiting for a global plan that won't break the bank with roaming fees.

There was a press release announcing such a plan with a tri-band UMTS/HSDPA card (plus quad-band GPRS/EDGE) at $140 per month with 100MB of roaming data (outside the US) included and unlimited data within the US.

But... nothing since then. The Cingular sales reps that I talked to don't seem to know anything about it.

Any info on this?

My rep said that their high speed service is coming out in November and it will be faster than EVDO and allow international roaming. I will ask if it is the plan referred to in your link.

I just have TMo EDGE, well and TMo unlimited WiFi. But I got my TyTN yesterday after ScottCs suggestion and that is a BANG - UP device :)

You can really tell how much faster the processor is than in my Treo 700w. Even though the Treo has EvDO the TyTN processor seems to make up some of the difference. Im feeling pretty good with the Treo w/EvDO in the US and the TyTN for out of the country or for when I want a bigger keyboard.

I wonder if the TyTN isnt approaching laptop substitute for a lot of applications?

It needs to be little bit bigger, it needs a VGA screen and for the love of... it needs a frikkin USB host port. Are you listening HTC? USB HOST PORT.

VGA really ought to be the norm by now (in fact, for browsing, we really need 800x600 - I'm having real difficulty finding a phone/PDA replacement for my hx4700). Speaking of it needing to be a little bigger, there's always the JasJar and that's just too big.

This via text.dslreports.com/speedtest ?

My Verizon and Sprint EVDO connections rarely go above 400kbps when tested (using Treo 700w, MotoQ, BB7130e, PPC-6600).

What metro area (if I may ask)?

Oh my, I get twice that routinely in EvDO areas of NYC region. Using a Treo 700w on VZW.

I'm glad others are talking about the TyTn.. I ordered one and should have it tomorrow. Longtime Treo 650 user looking for a change.
