is there a way to open a cingular blackberry?
can i use a prepaid sim card once its open?
|
If by "open" you mean unlock then yes, there are third party service that can unlock them.
http://www.gsmlocker.com/blackberry-unlock.htm http://www.unlockitnow.com/Blackberry/ Keep in mind though that with a prepaid sim none of the data services on the device will work, it'll only be a phone with the ability to send/receive text messages. No email, and no browser. You'd be better off getting a $20 Nokia phone instead. |

Sadly almost all those ebay sellers scam you with their insane shipping costs. Or check the local Target and find a prepaid T-mobile Nokia, those are easy to unlock, just make sure it is a model that supports the GSM850 band for Cingular. |
Cingular emailed the unlock codes for my Blackberry after I called. You apparently have to have had the account WITH THEM for a period of time. Other than that, it's 3rd party.
My guess and experience is that the codes are model dependent and identical for each model. The first code they emailed didn't work, then we supplied the correct Blackberry model #, 7290, and the new emailed code worked perfectly on both of our phones. I'm not sure I'd disagree with ScottC, ever :) , but many eBay sellers are selling cheap and jacking the shipping costs to save the eBay and PayPal commissions. (i.e., your $20 item with $5 shipping is now a $2 item with $23 shipping.) Good luck. |

The code is usually based on the IMEI (ID#) of the phone and model, so it's specific to your phone only. |

One way to open your blackberry is to drop it and then just pick away the cracked pieces of plastic :)

That is not true. I have a vodafone 7100v BB unlocked. I have a 7130 BB locked to vodafone. I took the sim out of the 7130 and stuck it in the 7100. I still had e-mail, browser and everything. The functions are dependent on the support on the account the sim is connected to and not if the phone is unlocked or not. So when I ditch this country and move across the pond, I have an unlocked BB I can stick my Rogers pay monthly in to and add BB suport to the account and off I go. /E |
