MacBook/Blackberry compatibility

Ok, I want to get a MacBook and also a Blackberry 8700c with Cingular service. My question is, are they compatible for synching? I'm sorry, Mac will be new for me so I wanted to ask the experts here. I know that they both have Bluetooth built-in, but was wondering what synchs? iCal and the Address Book? that is what I would need most of all to synch. Anything else would be a bonus. FYI - I may just be using my Blackberry for that, a Blackberry and not for a phone as well.

Please advise.

thanks,
FlyboyHNL

You'll need this extra software created by a third party, but RIM (makers of Blackberry) reached some kind of licensing agreement that allows it to be free for all Blackberry users. So with this you'll be set for syncing, it would appear. I have no firsthand knowledge of the software, but I read about PocketMac here and there and it seems to be regarded well enough.

No offense to flytertalk but better source would be apple.com > support > discussions > drill down to specific forum/thread with search mode (including iSync thread topic).

He claims to be a Mac newbie.

With all due respect to everyone on the site, I sincerely believe apple.com and a couple of other mac related sites better suited for him, both for his specific query and future reference...

IMHO
:)

PS

Here's two threads to help - unfortunately RIM products not on the list supported directly by apple.

I use a program called "The Missing Sync" for my MacBook Pro and Treo650. I believe you can use it to sync the blackberry as well, here is the link.

I looked there last night as that was the first product that came to mind, but as far as I can tell they do not make Missing Sync for Blackberry. Only PocketMac which I linked above does so and is essentially officially sanctioned by RIM. Apparently both companies make software to sync with PocketPC, and I don't know which is better.

versiontracker.com will give some indication of how both are 'rated' by users.

i've been using PocketMac for Blackberry for years. it's not 100% of functionality that PC software has but had everything I needed to use Blackberry with a Mac. good to see that a full version is coming out though! great progress!

PocketMac is a POS and BB knows it. But they dragged, and dragged and dragged on seamless Mac compatibility. Alas, they're a little late for this 6-year BB user. I just switched to iPhone last month. I'm still grappling with the iPhone's lack of a physical keyboard. And I miss the level of customization that BB offers. Aside from those, iPhone 3GS rocks! But AT&T sucks. (Sorry if I hijacked the thread.)

PocketMac was never enough for me, and that's why I switched originally to the iPhone. Now that the Tour has come out, and BB has seamless Mac compatibility, I can finally go back to BlackBerry.

I would have considered going to the iPhone 3GS from my original iPhone, but AT&T's roaming rates in Canada cannot compare to Verizon.

One of my clients is switching all the Blackberry users (over 4,000) to iPhones in the next couple months. They said they expect to recover the cost of the transition in as little as 9 months by getting rid of their BES and AT&T's retention deal to prevent a switch to Verizon.

Sure, but what of the productivity impact to the users? The integration just isn't as good.

And I'm not entirely sure what it has to do with using a BB on a Mac, but that's a different issue. Back on topic now....
